I just watched TransAmerica on DVD and I think it’s brilliant. In terms of plot, character development and acting, it is the best film that I’ve seen over the last several years.

Before seeing it, I couldn’t quite picture about a female actress playing a man uncomfortable with her/his body.

I imagined the whole looking in the mirror and tucking in the dick and balls. And, truthfully I haven’t an idea how any transvestite can walk or sit down like a lady with his/her dick and balls tucked in under.

After seeing it, I realize what an incredible performance by Felicity Huffman. She was robbed of an Oscar.

And then at the start of the movie, she so nailed the role of a man pretending to be a woman thing – a bit over-exaggeration mannerisms. I noticed that particularly when she drops something on the way to work.

It didn’t seem too contrived to me. The only part I wondered about was her standing up to pee on roadside when the coyotes howled. I know she was afraid of snakes, bugs, etc., but she would have had to temporarily pinched it to not pee on her panties. Since her penis disgusted her so, I’m no sure why fear would win out over disgust. Maybe, that was another layer of her mental state or just a means by which her/his son sees her/his penis.

Okay, major minus points for getting me all confused about pronouns.

1. Just Like Heaven--nice chick flick. I like Reese in it
2. In Her Shoes--Another chick flick. Heavy on the Cameron Diaz in a bikini, so you pervs might like it. ;)
3. Crash--It never seemed to mesh together like I thought it would.
4. Empire Falls--This was an HBO flick that was nominated for a bunch of Golden Globes. All-star cast including Paul Newman, Ed Harris and Helen Hunt, very good.
5. Walk the Line--Better the 2nd and 3rd times I saw it. :)
6. Grey's Anatomy, Season 1--Great for seeing plot development of this season and for seeing more of McDreamy.

in that case, I forgive you for the "joaquin was robbed" comments ;)

Well I thought the way it was going to tie together was going to be different. So when what I was expecting didn't happen, I was disappointed. Maybe I need to watch it again.

he was robbed! now, i'm not sure how Reese Witherspoon won for that role over the others.....that i dont get

but Joaquin learned to play guitar and sing for that role, and he had Cash's mannerisms down to a tee...i thought he deserved it imo

as for crash, i dont think it was supposed to come together, i think it was supposed to point out how much impact one person can have in a single event, and how those events effect others you dont see......i probably worded that poorly but i thought it was a great movie

Joaquin's portrayal of Cash was flat spooky. I've never been a Cash fan. I thought he sounded congested. I do like Joaquin doing Cash though. As for Reese, I think she won because she was playing a real person. Joaquin would have won had the Capote guy not been in it.

I fully agree he deserved an Oscar for the role--the problem was that Phillip Seymour Hoffman also deserved an Oscar for Capote, and in my opinion (and apprently also the Academy's) he deserved it more. I thought Joaquin Phoenix deserved the supporting actor Oscar in 2001 for Gladiator also, but Benicio del Toro won it for Traffic.

As perfect as Phoenix did Cash, Hoffman did Capote.

on a scale of difficulty, would you say it would be harder to portray a musician......having to learn the instrument AND vocals, along with everything else

or playing a gay author with a peculiar voice

i agree hoffman nailed the role, but i dont think the degree of difficulty was as high

just my thoughts

I think the catch is that Capote is a much more difficult person/character to capture accurately without turning the character into a caricature. It's tough to make such a weird guy still seem like a real person and not a cartoon.

Edit: so basically the opposite of what you said. Everyone has a voice, and actors are used to modulating their voices to sound like different people. And Cash's guitar work isn't really virtuosic. I mean, it's not like he had to learn all of Eric Clapton's solos or anything. ;)

I agree with GHP. I also think you have to consider things beyond pure mimicry

While there was some serious emotional stuff going on with Walk the Line, I think the emotional conflict in Capote was much deeper. It wasn't smashing up stuff and drinking like mad, it was tearing yourself apart inside because of this complex internal moral struggle. And Walk the Line has a fairly happy resolution... he's successful and gets the girl. Capote was miserable, didn't have a happy resolution to his story, and I don't think he ever finished another novel.

I know what you mean by thinking it would come together differently than it did but I LOVED this movie...I would say it is one of my favorite movies ever.

Watch it again without looking for that tie in. I think you will like it more.

The most unexpected tie in was ...well...I hate to say since I don't know how "hide" things. I'll just say the one at the very end.

A History of Violence - AWESOME movie. Kept me on the edge of my seat. Viggo and the director got robbed. This was 10 times better than Crash.

As far as Oscar winning movies go, Crash was slightly better than The English Patient.

I have Walk the Line at home...just have not had a chance to watch it.

I can tell you however that The Little Mermaid II, Return to the Sea, is captivating.

In an effort to "strengthen the marriage" this last week, I watched not one but TWO chick flicks.

"Must Love Dogs" - Amusing enough. Completely unrealistic portrayal of guys but I didn't hate it. No weepy scenes.

"Failure to Launch" - sucked HARD. Matthew McConaughey solidifies his position as the most annoying she-man actor in Hollywood. Sarah Jessica Parker is as annoying as ever. They didn't have enough plot for a whole movie so they had to throw in at least five "huh?" scenes. I could've lived my entire life without seeing Terry Bradshaw's rear end. They should've named it "Failure to Entertain". Let's just say, I bought some future chick flick insurance with this one. ;)

I almost forgot:

Doom - I really enjoyed this. Mindless violence, thin plot. It had enough manliness in it to wash out MOST of "Failure". The FPS scene was a lot of fun, much better than I thought it would be.

Must Love Dogs sounds like a beastialty pron movie.

Failure to Launch sounds like the title of an infomercial for Viagra.

We watched The Upside of Anger the other day. Wasn't too bad as far as chick flicks go: lots of booze, a middle-aged cradle robbing sleezebag, and a washed up alcoholic jock.

HGttG - Read the book.

Lord of War - Not too bad. Nicholas Cage does a fairly typical, if just slightly restrained, Nicholas Cage character. Gets a little preachy at the end though.
