WTF are those clumps of weeds that are the first thing to come up in your yard in the spring? They have little purple flowers on them and I get clumps of them every year despite putting down the fertilizer/weed killer at the specified intervals. They make the whole yard look like it needs to be mowed even though it hasn't really started growing yet. They will go away once the weather warms up but they're irritating.

Vile weed!

with purple flowers!

So that little girls going on walks can pick them for their mommies who then take them home and try to find the tiniest little vase or cup to fill with water and place them in.

Does it have a fairly thick stalk?
<insert obligatory thick stalk joke>

I used to get that a lot in Oklahoma but as much down here in Dallas. I always thought it was chickweed.

I don't think that's it, Doc. It's not quite that tightly clustered. It's kind of loose and floppy.

And I don't know about the girth of its stalk.

Lord, where is this going?

I do know exactly what you are talking bout. The flower stalks shoot up a bit higher than the leaves? Right?

Oh, and seriously - our lawn had a ton of weeds last year so we hired a lawn service (local guy, not big chain) to come out and fertilize and spray weeds every so often. (OK, so we also hired the guy because pg and I both have crazy grass allergies and would rather not mess with it.)

Anyway, he actually came out abou a month ago and put down a pre-emergent weed preventer while there while the lawn was actually covered in ice. (Nice idea; as the ice melted the stuff soaked right into the ground.) We just have a few patches of stubborn fescue in the backyard right now. rest of the lawn is bermuda.

I did the same when we first bought our house. Then I figured I could do the job just as well. I can't.

yep--I don't remember how much we pay him everytime he sprays stuff, but he does an awesome job. Last year half the yard was weeds. this year it's kinda perdy... (just the grass, not the rest of the yard)

If you water it and it dies, its grass. If you kill it and it comes back, its a weed. Thats all I know.

What type of grass would have a chance of surviving 2 large puppies wrestling and chasing each other in. I currently have an ever decreasing St. Augustine back yard, but it's basically all dirt now. Should I try to plant something or just accept my redneck hell and have dirt in the backyard until the dogs get out of their puppyhood.

If you were spraying your yard at the correct intervals as you say, you wouldn't have that stuff growing in it.;)

The pre-emergent is about the most important application of the year.

I have one 90 pound lab. My backyard is 1/2 dirt. I just accept that and focus on the front yard. :D

I'm about to that point. I just keep thinking if I get the sprinklers fixed and trim back some trees and all that, that some super-strong grass will take root and can survive their playing when it's dormant.

I think bermuda is better for wear and tear. But it is a royal b!tch to grow from seed and the dogs would rip up any seed or sod that you place back there before it has time to take hold.

we used to have a yellow lab and a bermuda yard. i don't think we ever had problems... except when he'd eat the stuff and hack it up. But he did the same thing with dirt.

I wouldn't go the sod route, but bermuda does spread pretty fast. get a piece or two of sod andstick some plugs in wherever the grass is really sparse. that's what we did to fill in patches in our yard. (in kansas)
