I call it "the reverse cape with pictures of barber's shears and combs all over it", or just "the reverse cape" for short.

It's a cape.

My wife is a good hillbilly woman. First thing outta high school she got her "degree" up at the barber college in Iowa. She's licensed to cut hair, do manicures, and pedicures. With 5 sons, we've saved a small fortune on hair cuts.

She says "cape."

My first guess was "barber cloth."

So I did a GIS and the first result was a "styling cape."

So there you go.

My dad cut my hair all the way through high school. The first time I ever stepped foot into a barbershop was my freshman year of college.

Frankly, I was nervous as hell that I'd screw up some secret barbershop lingo or ettiquette and wind up embarrased at best, or with an unwanted bald spot at worst. :O

An apron is what some people wear when they cook. I would think drape or cape.

i think the difference in purpose is more important than construction. you can construct clothes a lot of different ways but if the purpose is to cover up your top half, we usually call it a "shirt".

so by that thinking, a cape is usually something worn to conceal/hide, or to make you look really cool.

a smock is something you wear when doing work that might get your clothes dirty. painters and sculpters wear smocks a lot. so IMO the thing you wear to keep hair off you at the barber is more a smock than a cape. capes don't go all the way around, and smocks usually have sleeves, but the function seems more in line with the word "smock"

Nah, the funny shirt that the barber wears could be called a smock, but probably not the formless piece of fabric draped over your frontside.

Look Mensa chick. This ain't up for debate. Do not attempt to utilize your sharp wit and superior deductive reasoning skills here.

It's. A. Cape.
