On the news today movie owner's say cell phone's are the reason people won't go to movies.I think it's because they want 8 bucks to get in.They also want permission to block call's during show's.

i think its because they charge 4 bucks for 50 cents worth of coke.....

my guess is that the theatres make very little off ticket sales, and make up for it with the concessions

The biggest problems with theaters are:
-the cost for what is craptastic product these days
-the cost for high fructose corn syrup laden products
-the other *******s that are talking each other, making comments, etc or talking on the phone
-small children that have no business being at the movie I am watching- 5 year olds at ROTS for instance.
-the smell

i'd love for them to block cell phones... if your calls are so important, rent out your own theater, Bruce

for concessions, i just don't buy their overpriced crap...

i fill up on cupcakes before i get there :D

This is why we wait for it to come out on PPV. Plus there have honestly been very few movies that i'm just dying to lay dow that kind of cash for. I'd rather take the wife out to a nice lunch or dinner and have a few drinks anyways.

This entire issue is retarded -- movie theaters are entirely capable of blocking cell phone signals -- all they need to do is put some copper mesh in their walls.

Petitioning for permission from the gummint is assinine. There are no laws stating you can't insulate your building from EM radiation -- and said insulation would kill cell phones deader 'n hell.

They also wouldn't interfere with cell phones outside the theater (well, depending on which direction the towers were), or have any other unintended consequences. Legalizing jammers opens up jammers to the market in general - making it more likely we'll see them showing up where we don't want 'em.

Like hotels, which are already rumored by business travelers to employ 'em to force guests to use the hotel phones and their exorbinant charges.

We don't go to a ton of movies, but when we have been I can only think of one or two instances where someones phone went off. The first time the person quickly turned it off and then the second time it was this teenage chick who was sitting on the back row and answered her phone and talked the entire way out of the theater.

If we do go, we usually try and hit a matinee and I'll put my phone on vibrate, but usually ignore all calls.

As far as the super high priced refreshments . . . do your dates even carry purses? The bigger the better. I know you've all heard bottles/cans of pop being opened in the theater. :D

i've had a guy in our group answer his phone(not on vibrate) and have a conversation... twice in the same movie

we almost killed him

what in the hell did people do for emergency situations prior to cell phones?

My wife called me on my work phone every 15 minutes to ask me a question, thus tying up the line. Now she calls me on the mobile.

Oh, wait. You said emergency.

In the rare case I get to see a movie at the theater, I turn mine on silent, and if I get a call, I exit to talk. Happened twice during King Kong and I also sit where I can exit easily without disturbing others.

i am occaisionally on-call (2 weeks a month ) and i'll leave my phone on vibrate, i've only had to leave the theater once, luckily it was a movie i had already seen

turned out to be a bogus call though

People who answer cellphones in movie theaters and golf courses should be shot for their blatant stupidity. You might as well answer the phone during sex (assuming it was good Angelina Jolie sex and not cardboard Jennifer Aniston sex).

Some of us have no life. I would only answer a call from someone I knew to be a possible emergency.

Same here. Most people have been very embarassed about it too. The younger the patron, the more likely they are to be

I do to. Besides being more courteous, it is also more fun. :D

I understand the emergency argument. However, my family and friends already know that I will only answer my cellphone 1/3 of the time even though I have it on me. They should always leave a message (which I check immediately) if it is indeed important. If someone does not leave a voicemail, they have no reason to gripe. Repeated calls also do the trick. Thus, I don't get bothered by every "what's up" call, don't disturb others and I respond to important situations only 1 or 2 minutes later than if I had answered. If that 1 or 2 minutes is vital, what the hell is the person doing at the movies? They should be at the hospital.

When you think about it, if the movies want us to pay $8 for a ticket and $20 for a small popcorn and bottled water, they should bring back the ushers with flashlights that keep the peace. When I was a kid, we were terrified of those guys. Not sure why, but we were.

I haven't been bothered by cell phones at the movies too often, but the one time I can think of was a real doozy. During the climax of Mystic River, when Tim Robbins character is in a jam, everything is deathly quiet. Suddenly a cell phone rings. I honestly thought that someone was calling someone in the scene to give some key information to one of the characters.

Well...no. It was some yainch about 4 seats from me, who then proceeded to talk for the next several minutes.

As far as my movie pet peeves go, my biggest one is the new habit of showing 20 minutes of cola and car comercials prior to the 20 minutes of previews after I've paid my $8 for a ticket and $5 for a coke.

You are correct sir.

First few weeks of a movie's release almost 100% of the gate goes to the distributor. After that, nobody's going to see the movie.

Sadly, this is not limited to cellphones, but pathetic humans. I recall seeing Back to the Future in the 80's as a kid. A family of 4 came in 20 minutes after it started and spent the next hour plus pounding me with questions about what happened?, why is that important?, who is that?, are they related?, etc. Being a kid, I answered them without putting my fist in their grill.

All this leads me to think that more drive-ins should be built. You have the pleasure of getting out of the house to see a movie, yet you still have your own space. Or, perhaps a movie with phone booths instead of stadium seating would be nice.

Alamo Draft House is a great place to see movies here in Austin. No young kids, besides certain matinees. Loud talkers quickly escorted out. Decent food, at farily reasonable prices brought to your seat. And of course, beer.

The only problem with the one nearest me is that shows sell out extremely early, because everyone else wants to go there too.

i take my cell phone, out of habit.......but its always on vibrate

in my previous job/life, i had to be attached to my cellphone 24/7 because of my job position........there wasnt anywhere i could go without it, unless i was signed out on leave

i wont answer it in the seat, but i may look and see who it is, and then if necessary, step out

one main reason i dont miss that old job

Bear Tooth Theater Pub up here, but they don't show first-run movies.

I really do wish they'd bring ushers back.

Before they ban cell-phones at theaters, I'd like to see them implement no-child theaters and showings-which I guess some places already do.

i like the Harkins thing, i think it's cheaper for them to be in their daycare thing than to see the movie
