Have any of you ever replaced the gear in your garage door opener? Should I try to replace it or just get a whole new opener? I can put a new opener up easy. That gear looks hard to replace but its lots cheaper than a new opener.

How old is it?

What kind is it?

What does one exactly like it cost?

All of these questions are important in deciding if it's worth fixing.

If it's relatively new and a pretty good model I'd fix it, but if it's old or a cheap model I'd toss it.

And what caused it to break? Bad product? Door working improperly? Fluke?

My blasted gear was plastic and broke IN TWO.
Now I have to hoist my fatt butt in and out of the car.

Its a Craftsman that I believe is about 10 years old. I saw a new one for somewhere around $250. I can get the part on ebay for about $25.

It's a Craftsman, won't they replace it for free? ;)

You can get a Genie screw drive for less than $200 at Home Depot or Lowes. Sounds like it's time.

I replaced the gear in mine about a year ago. The gear was about 40 bucks at a parts store.

The gear is a lot easier to replace than the opener - that was my experience
on my parents old craftsman. When it finally died for good, it was more work
to replace the whole thing.

How long did it take? Did you have any problems?

Mine had two plastic gears- the large one was shredded on mine and took about two hours to replace and get it all back to together in perfect order.

There is a smaller cylinder shaped plastic gear that I did not replace. I think it would have taken significantly longer to change that one as well.

Both gears came in the replacement kit, which is how they gouge you. The place I got it from said the small gear almost never strips as its made of a stronger material.
