I just got this computer at work and I can't get anything to print.

I'm hooked into the innerweb, obviously. The printer is a copier/printer thing that everyone else uses as the printer. I got on one of their machines and got the IP addy for the printer and installed the printer's drivers from the manufacturer's website. Nothing. We are not on a server and our stupid IT department had control of my machine for about 3 hours this morning and nothing. The lady finially gave up and quit I guess.

Do any of you fine people have any ideas or suggestions?

Sorry, I quit doing desktop support years and years ago. :)

can you not just look at the setup on another computer in the office?

I did(I think) and got the IP addy and the Port. What else do I need?

What message, if any, do you get when you print something? Or does it just act like it printed.

Do you have access to the printer location through the network?

1stTimeCaller
3/14/2006, 05:17 PM
we don't really have a network. There is no server. It's my understanding that we print through the internet.

1stTimeCaller

and I get an error message after about a minute that the printer failed to......

did you create a new port?

this is an IP printer, not a printer shared off of a PC, right?

1stTimeCaller
3/14/2006, 05:21 PM
I created a new port IP_xxx.xxx.x.xx:pORT1 because that's what the other guys had. the P is capitalized but on here : and a P together = :P

It's an IP printer and not shared off of a PC

did you create a local port or a "Standard TCP/IP Port"?

i'm assuming this is XP?

Mjcpr

That monitor copying thing is old technology; it's a lot easier now what with the flat planels and such.

Standard TCP/IP Port.

Wait a minnit, is this port owned by a Dubai company??

Have you tried eyeballing the printer driver/setup on a working PC (right click-properties)? If you can, copy the driver on a working setup.

- Can you ping the printer from the brokeback PC? If so, ping it from a working setup to see if there's any differences.

Is there a wrokgroup that all of the other computers belong to and you don't?

To check, hit the "windows" key and pause/break.

Click the "Computer Name" tab, see if the workgroup on your peecee is the
same as the others.

OK, there are 8 Cat5 cables going into our VPN-router thingy plus another cable/connection labeled internet. There are 9 cat5 cables. They are all numbered but the outlets in our offices are not numbered. I wonder if the #4 cable not being connected has anything to do with it?

Ike

did you add it as a local printer or a network printer? we have a similar setup, and it actually turned out that in order to get it to work, you had to add it as a local printer.

How do I ping the printer? Hell, I couldn't even ping the copy girl at the last place:O

Ike

try it without the :pORT1 attached to it. I noticed that none of mine have that...dunno if it makes any kind of difference.

click start, run, type command

in the ms-dos box, type ping 1.2.3.4

WHERE 1.2.3.4 is the IP address of the printer

open up a command prompt (curse windows for not having X terminals readily available) and type "ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" (without the quotes)
use ctrl-c to stop

the address doesn't have the :pORT1, I checked and I/we just named it that.

What about Raw setting and LPR setting? should the port number be 9100 in Raw setting?

yes. Raw is a differend protocol, and the printer may or may not support it, but it operates over port 9100

ok, that tells you that the machine is alive, and that a route from your computer to the printer does exist.....so the screwup is on your end.

If I can ping it and the ping makes a round trip then my machine can 'see' the printer right?

1TC - try this

Start-> Settings -> Printers and Faxes

click add a printer

The add a printer wizard opens up, click next

Tick the "a network printer, or printer attached to another computer" box
and click next

tick "browse for a printer"

and see if it shows up in the list

sounds like no one is sharing it, which might be an easier solution... have someone share it for you in the meantime, then you can do the above, only instead of browsing you'd put in \\ip.address\sharename

that's what i meant, if one of them clicks the "share printer" thingy then you could print through their computer in the meantime, you'd just need to know their IP, of course they may need to to make exceptions in the firewall too thouh
