This article claims it to be possibility some yrs down the road. Whether it will happen or not isn't my point....rather, it paints a fascinating picture of a large, chaotic, and troubled country on the brink of disaster.

I'd heard from at least two people who have been there (one is from there), that corruption, extortion, and armed gangs rule the Christian south, while Sharia and the Nigerian Army rule the north, but this article does a good job of summing it up.

Damn. I just realized the link doesn't give you the full article.

Oh well, it's a fascinating read, nonetheless.

Nigeria was a case study in one of my senior Poli Sci classes. The history and future of that nation, I think are very fascinating, and if they could ever get thier **** together, a nation with a lot of potential.

I can't see any possible justification for going into Nigeria unless it's for oil.

There is no other strategic resources more vital to our national security than oil. You may not want to admit it or you may lambast our dependence on oil but without out our nation fails pure and simple.

Maybe we should stake claim to it before China does?

We could alternatively nuke china with everything we've got and
eliminate their demand for oil. ;)

Wasn't it Nigeria that offered Osama to Clinton, but he refused to nab him for some dumbass reason?

It was some flaky businessman type from Chad, I believe, who turned out to be totally unreliable/uncredible. He approached the US saying he knew people who knew people who could get Osama if the US would pave the way for him on some business deal in Chad.

Lagos is LOADED with oil.

Lagos is loaded with 13 million people and counting. The Niger Delta is apparently the oil rich region of Nigeria.

I have a friend in Houston that works for chevron, he always just says
he's going to Lagos - of course, I can't name one other city in Nigeria.

Plus the nation has already tried to spilt once, perhaps y'all remember Biafra. Biafra was the christian region of Nigeria.

I'm pretty sure Biafra is only part of the Christian region. Biafra was based on a specific ethnic group in the Niger Delta that was attempting to split away.

I think. :D

Your probably right, my whole senior year is kind o' hazy. Either way, Nigeria is another one of the crazy-quilt ethnic countries that seem to work so well.

Here's the CIA World Factbook page on Nigeria

Yikes, 250 ethnic groups.
