Texas Pete

c'mon former Marines back me on this one.

I remember just a shot of this turned the bag nasties into a great breakfast, way better than Tabasco

Lance makes some hot potato chips. It says Texas Pete on the bag.

I'd never heard of it otherwise

not really hot but has a good flavor, the further east you go the more you see it.

it's cheaper than Louisiana Hot Sauce

Never had that.

And it's not hard to be better than Tabasco. It takes way too much tabasco to make something hot enough, so by the time the dish is apropriately spicy, it just tastes like tomato. :/ (imo)

I really like the Louisiana Hot Sauce, as you say. Also try Crushed Scotch Bonnet Pepper Sauce (product of Jamaica). Good stuff. Not cheap tho.

I tried some of this stuff about six years ago and it has been a mainstay in our home ever since. Goes great with red beans & rice, jambalaya, nachos, and Asian cusisine. Very flavorful and the heat sneaks up on you after a few minutes.

i like it better than the squeeze bottle above. it rocks stir-fried rice into the stratosphere.

i like Lousiana Hot Sauce better than Tabasco since i always feel like i'm getting ripped off with Tabasco and LHS is pretty cheap. i do like the jalapeno Tabasco on eggs and hash browns.

there's a family from Jeruselem that owns a local deli and they have this middle eastern hot sauce that is HOT. it puts hair on your tongue and makes you like it.

For years now, Air Force guys have enjoyed the flame-y goodness of jellied gasoline. Here two airman select a restaurant-size bottle at their local Sams Club back in the late 1960's.

You ****in' hillbillies.

There's different hot sauces for different occasions. You can't just say "only Pistol Pete's for me."

On wings, red beans & rice, jambalaya, etc. it's Louisiana or Pete's.

On asian food, it's sauces made with those "chinese" red peppers.

On mexican food, it's salsa. Something with tomatoes, onions, cilantro, jalapenos, etc.

And then there's some food that you can experiment with. I like a sauce we picked up in St. Martin. It's called Matouk's. I personally like the calypso sauce (scotch bonnet peppers). It's tasty, and it's hotter than a beeznatch.

And I must say that Tabasco is probably the lamest of all the Louisiana pepper sauces.

I wonder what would be the best hot sauce for canned tuna and powdered milk?

Chuck Bao
3/13/2006, 01:09 PM
My favourite is the home-made stuff.

Take a very small quantity of uncooked rice and fry it in a very, very tiny amount of grease. Add fish sauce, lime juice, mashed fresh garlic cloves and generous quantities of dried chili powder.

Nam Jim Jou is the best sauce ever for BBQ chicken, pork or beef.

Fish sauce is like the salty fermented leftover bits of fish that nobody else wanted.

All I know is that you can't have real Thai food without it.
