Hey man, I agree with you about supporting our great military. I come from a military family. My father was a Captain in the Marines. My uncle is a General and has done two tours in Iraq. My Grandfather was a Marine. My other Grandfather was in the Army Air-Corps in WWII. I myself have considred entering the service after college as an officer.

But what we are doing here is making fun of the Corps of Cadets. The are not an armed service of any type. They have nothing to do with the military. No ties whatsoever. Many of them do enter the armed services, but just as many of them do not. They are a social club that is very bizzare and they look like Nazis. My father and my uncle have always told me that the biggest weirdos and creeps in the service are the ones that were in the Corps of Cadets. I'm sorry if you took this thread the wrong way. It is not poking fun at our brave soldiers in any way. Just the frickin lunatics in aggie land.

Look, there are alot of jokes that can be made about the Corps, heck, I know, I went there. But, there is one thing that does bother me and alot of us Ags, and that is the Nazi crap. Look, I for one don't really buy into the 'aggies are nazis' stuff, but one thing is for certain: Every time I've been at Kyle field for a football game I have experienced the 'traditions' of the corps of cadets and the aggie faithful. It is nothing short of bizzare. It was not intimidating or admirable in any way IMO. It was very literally like being surrounded by 80,000 brainwashed, mindless, psycopaths.
Others may look at the shaved heads, mounted cavalrymen, yell leaders, goose-stepping 'band', and dead collies and they might see devotion and tradition. All I see is a seriously disturbed university family. Seriously, I've always left College Station feeling unsettled and piteous toward most of those people. Aggies, especially the 'corps' seriously strike me as a disturbed group.

OKAY, NOW YOU'VE DONE IT ... IT'S BAD ENOUGH TO CALL US NAZI'S ... BUT TO CALL US LONGHORNS!?!?!?!?!?!?! ;)

To everyone else:

A&M is a different kinda place, that is very true. I had fully planned to go to Oklahoma until a little (or not so little) thing called out of state tuition raised its ugly head, so I had to pick (for cost reasons) an in state University. I chose A&M for two reasons; a) it was known as a good engineering school, and b) it wasn't that little place in Austin (dad, Sooner class of 74, wasn't gonna send a dime there). I knew nothing about A&M other than it had a good rep in engineering. I never followed them athletically, and I knew nothing about their traditions. And, I never went to fish camp, either (had to chose between fish camp and a trip to Europe .... what would you do?).

So, I stepped onto campus for the first time much like you all. I had grown up a Sooner fan (and have remained one still) and had no idea what I was stepping into. Yeah, it was different, but once you learn about why things are like they are, it's really kinda cool. Yeah, we do alot of "goofy" stuff, but at the same time, it's kinda FUN goofy stuff for 18 to 22 year old kids. And, there is alot of it you do not see that is quite moving. Instead of a football game, try attending a Muster or Silver Taps service and see what you think of Aggies and our traditions.

It's just too easy to make fun of the Corps of Cadets. They provide all of us with hours of amusement, puzzlement, and humor.

In all fairness, the ones that I've worked with that actually became officers have been some of the best. They don't come across as trying too hard to prove themselves (very important to NCO's). For the most part, even the young officers from A&M have a sense of humor about themselves, aren't scared to take charge and don't take it personal when they make a mistake and get called out for it. When they see something wrong, they tend to address it without hesitation, but don't come across as pricks in the process.

There is something different about A&M officers, and from my experience, it's a positive difference. Of course I'm generalizing.

You should see some of the winners at Gaylor. The old women debate goes back to the "old Army days" when A&M was all male and the closest major school around with women was Baylor. Corps guys flocked north alot of times on the weekend and many had Baylor coed girlfriends. So, the Aggie men versus Baylor boys feud over women goes back a long time, as does some heated "bad blood."

When I joked about blowing up Baylor, I was joking, but the event was real. Back in the 1920's we hadf a football game up in Waco with Baylor and a huge fight broke out in the stands (ala European soccer) and in the brawl one Aggie died from a head wound reportedly suffered by a blow with a folding chair. Of course, we were all male and all military back then, and as such we had a full battery of artillery and live ammo, and a group of Aggies, inraged by the days events, rushed back to College Station to retrieve our weaponry with the full intention of laying seige and bombarding Baylor. The Texas Ranger got word of what was happening and stopped the plot while the cannon were being moved.

Funny question because it really depends on when you graduated. Some consider it a line of the "good old days" of all male all military versus a graduate after the Corps became voluntary and women folk started strolling campus. Some would consider "new Army" to be the kids there now and "they don't do things the way we did them" differences between today and whenever the alum was there. It is kinda a perception thing about what A&M was like in "your time" versus now.

Why am I constantly amazed at how full of crap Aggiedom is...

Yes that incident did happen, but the idea of aTm somehow pulling an artillery piece down to Waco to bombard the campus is just absurd to anyone outside of the maroon cult. Yeah people get their gander up and talk about doing plenty of crazy stuff, but if you think that shelling the Baylor campus was ever a real possibility then you're an idiot.

Also, I'd like to point out that in this little war the casulty count is in Baylor's favor.

Mac94
3/16/2006, 09:31 AM
Bear -

The story of the artillery is fairly common Aggie lore. I first heard the story on an offical tour of campus my first week at A&M and have heard it told many times. Details vary as bit, but the basic thread is the same, that some members of the corps were going to attack Baylor.

One version is found on this blog:

http://lexrob.com/2005/09/30/from-the-outside-am-vs-baylor/

As far as recorded history goes, the story ends here. But history isn’t always recorded, at least on paper, and this legend has an unwritten denouement.

The Aggies wanted vengeance. A few cadets broke into the National Guard armory in College Station, stole a canon, loaded it onto a truck, and started off for Waco. Their plan was to blow Baylor to hell. Some say that Baylor students caught wind of this plan, found whatever they might use to defend their beloved university, and took up posts around campus. The Aggie plot to take the Christian university under siege was foiled by the Texas Rangers.

Around A&M, the core of the story is considered fact. And, let's face it, there are always those guys in the Corps that are just crazy enough to try to do something like that. ;)

You little punk dip-sh!t. You don't know who YOU are talking to. Nobody said that every aggie, or rotc guy turns into Audie Murphy. I was taking exception with the low lifes who belittle and rag on anything in a uniform, without themselves having the guts to put themselves in harm's way.

And, my fart's farts have as much or more military experience than you do. I'm just not one of those guys who talks about being a tanker or a DI to make up for small genitals.

Dismissed.

There is also an intesting blurb written in 1951 to commemorate the first 75 years of A&M. It does not record a cannon piece but does say that a large number of the Corps, after getting word of the death of a fellow Aggie, "mobilized" and set out in mass for revenge. That article states that "the Texas militia" got word of what was happening and stopped the Aggies beofre reaching Waco.

Mac,
I'm not disputing the event happened. I'm disputing the fact that whatever circumstances transpired there is no way the Baylor campus would ever actually have been shelled.

not talk there fruit hole. whenever you feel the need to see the proof, let me know. i (and maybe you. i can't tell yet.) fought for the right for ANYONE to say anything they like as long as it doesn't threaten national security. ROTC is NOT real military. i don't care what you say and that won't change even if you say you have been in since christ was a corporal.

if you HAVE actually served....stick your hand in your pocket, grab your military bearing and think about why you served. freedom of speech is one of the BIGGEST reasons. Stand at ease.

btw, it's NOT DI those are wingnuts. Drill Sergeants are ARMY.

Yeah, you've already told us who you're taking exception with. The problem is that there isn't anyone like that on this board. I'm not a vet, but it's glaringly obvious that there are several on this board and all of us who aren't vets are faithful patriots. All we were doing was getting a laugh out of the bizarre Aggie cadets who's particular traditions, uniforms and personalities happen to be remeniscent of the Third Reich.

You're preaching to the choir here about respecting the uniform of U.S. servicemen.

The only thing this proves is that A&M cadets think more of themselves than they think of this country. Do you have one about A&M seceding from the Union?
