View Full Version : Why Would She Say Such A Thing?

My 5th grade daughter came home from school today saying this:

My very entertaining mother just sat upon nine puppies.

Can anyone guess why?

Is it a typing drill?

Mars Venus Earth....

I thought it was "my very educated mother just showed us nine planets."? No?

Either she's learning about the planets, or you should check her room for drugs when she's not around.

Maybe your mother was very educated.

I, however, am very entertaining. ;)

But I have not ever sat upon a puppy, much less nine of them.

Well you do have one piece of evidence that I would use to argue that. She's in 5th grade.

If she could remember that, she could remember Mercury, Venus, Earth....

No, Neptune and Pluto, about every 73 years, if I'm remembering right. But they just re-classified Pluto as "Not A Planet" a couple of years ago, so they need to revise their mnemonics anyway.

EDIT: I double-checked, and it's not official about Pluto, but a lot of people are tending to call Pluto a "Trans-Neptunian Object" since there are some other things out in the Kuiper belt with Pluto that are actually larger than Pluto.

Yeah that's quite the controversy at the moment. There's one object in particular out there they've already named and are considering deeming a planet as well, since it seems somehow harsh to strip Pluto of its planetary status. Of course there are many bigger than Pluto floating around in that area, so I'm not sure how they'll go about deciding. We could have anywhere from 8 to probably 20 planets or more.

One of my profs always said " On old olympus' towering top a Fin and German vend at hops." I always thought it was strange they had to go to a mountain top to sell necessary beer ingredients. Tell 'em what it means

My mother always said "Georgie eats old grey rats and paints houses yellow."

Now I defy a tenet gallantly
Of circle canon law: these integers
Importing circles' quotients are, we see,
Unwieldy long series of cockle burs
Put all together, get no clarity;
Mnemonics shan't describeth so reformed
Creating, with a grammercy plainly,
A sonnet liberated yet conformed.
Strangely, the queer'st rules I manipulate
Being followéd, do facilitate
Whimsical musings from geometric bard.
This poesy, unabashed as it's distressed,
Evolvéd coherent - a simple test,
Discov'ring poetry no numerals jarred.
