OKLAHOMA 6, ARIZONA 5 (OT)
The University of Oklahoma® Hockey club wound up the 2005-2006 season with a wild 6-5 overtime win against the University of Arizona at the ACHA D1 National Championship Tournament in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Arizona got on the board first with a goal at 13:57 but Kelly Forbes evened the score with a goal just over a minute later. The second period was dominated by Oklahoma and its power play as Sooners Mark Tylka, Forbes and Kevin Kennedy all scored power play goals to give OU what appeared to be a commanding 4-1 lead going in to the third. Arizona scored early in the third to make it 4-2 but Owen Brewer slipped the puck through the Arizona goalie’s five-hole to give the Sooners a three-goal cushion at 5-2. But the wheels fell off the OU bus and Arizona scored three goals, two of them in the last 1:01 of the game, to amazingly tie the game at 5 and send the contest to five-minute 4-on-4 sudden death overtime. The Sooners’ offense woke up in the OT period as Adrian Borchgrevink scored just 38 seconds into OT to give the Sooners a 6-5 win over Arizona. Sooners goaltender Aaron Schmeilski stopped 32 of the 37 shots he faced from Arizona while his counterpart in net for the Wildcats, Luke Edwall, stopped only 25 of OU’s 31 shots. OU was 4 for 11 on the power play while Arizona was 2 for 10 on the power play.
With the win, the Sooners end the 2005-2006 regular season with a record of 20-12-2 and will finish ranked 11th in the final ACHA D1 coaches poll. Arizona finishes at 21-13-0 and ranked 12th.
