IOWA STATE 4, OKLAHOMA 3 (OT)

The No. 14-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club made its first appearance at the ACHA D1 National Championship Tournament a memorable one by playing in the best game of the opening round; however, the Sooners ultimately lost in overtime to Iowa State University 4-3 today in West Chester, Pennsylvania. The Sooners started off shaky in the first few minutes of the game and Iowa State took advantage, scoring at the 5:54 mark to take a 1-0 lead. Forward Owen Brewer tied the game at 4:35 of the second period when he slipped a backhand shot past Iowa State goaltender Trent Baker into the ISU net. The Sooners almost took a 2-1 lead late in the second period but were thwarted by Baker who made an incredible save from the side of the goal crease when he swiped an OU shot headed into an empty net out of the air with the paddle of his stick. That save appeared to turn the momentum back in ISU’s favor as they scored goals at 18:25 and at 19:14 to take a 3-1 lead to the locker room at the second intermission. But OU refused to quit. The Sooners got to within one when Adrian Borchgrevink scored at 5:05 of the third. The Sooners struck again at 12:39 when Danny Force sent in a soft shot from the point that found its way past Baker to tie the game at 3 apiece. Sooners goaltender Aaron Schmeilski was outstanding in net for OU and was called upon to make several huge saves in the last minutes of the third to preserve the possibility of overtime. In the overtime period, Schmeilski and Baker played outstanding, turning away several shots, including an ISU breakaway opportunity with about 5 minutes to go in the overtime. Just when it was looking as if a second overtime period would be needed, the Cyclones found themselves with an odd-man rush on the Oklahoma net. Schmeilski made the initial stop but could not keep the rebound shot away from the wide open net and ISU scored the game winner at 17:56 in overtime. Schmeilski’s goaltending kept the Sooners in the game and he ended up stopping 54 of 58 ISU shots on goal. Baker stopped 56 of OU's 59 shots. OU was 1 for 4 on the power play while ISU was 0 for 6 on the power play.

The 12th seeded Sooners are now 19-12-2 while Iowa State improves to 32-5-7. Oklahoma next faces 10th seeded Arizona (21-12-0) at 2:00 P.M. EST (1:00 P.M. CST), who lost today in overtime to Lindenwood 3-2. In other scores from the ACHA D1 National Championship Tournament today, Illinois beat Robert Morris College 3-0, Duquesne pasted Weber State 6-1, Ohio snuck past Mercyhurst 3-2, Michigan-Dearborn held on to beat Arizona State 4-3, Penn State blew out Delaware 8-0, and Rhode Island beat host West Chester 4-1.
