Video showed Sutton holding bottle

By Nolan Clay and Randy Ellis
The Oklahoman

Police say recording was made about 14 months ago

STILLWATER - A security camera recorded coach Eddie Sutton with a bottle and urinating outside a middle school near his home about 14 months ago, police said.

No students were at Stillwater Middle School at the time because classes were out for Christmas break, police said.

Police Chief Norman McNickle confirmed he learned of the video recording after Sutton's injury accident Feb. 10. The police chief said he was told by police officer Guy Palladino, who is assigned to the middle school and monitors the security cameras from a school office.

The police chief said Palladino could not tell much about the bottle from the recording.

"It could have been ice tea. Who knows?" McNickle said.

The police chief said he never saw the recording.

The Oklahoma State University basketball coach was charged after the accident with aggravated driving under the influence, a misdemeanor. Sutton, 69, is on medical leave and recently had back surgery.

Sutton admitted in a news conference Feb. 15 he has "a problem with alcohol" and "succumbed to temptation and went and bought a bottle" before the accident. Another driver was hurt in the wreck.

Sutton has not admitted publicly to any other recent drinking.

No comment from coach
Sutton declined comment about the incident at the middle school. OSU officials said they did not know about it until informed recently by the police chief.

"We, like many people, just in the last few days have heard about this tape," spokesman Gary Shutt said. "The university, as far as I know, had no knowledge of it. We were not aware of it, and further, never saw it."

Shutt also said, "There's been no discussions that I'm aware of with anyone else about what might have happened in the past. And, as far as I know, there have been no discussions with coach Sutton. He's been recovering and had his surgery."

The police chief said Sutton could have been charged with outraging public decency only if someone was around and saw him urinating.

"You'd have to have a human to be able to say, 'I saw him doing this,' ... and be ready to testify to it," McNickle said.

The police chief said he recently confirmed that with "some prosecuting attorneys." He said he was told "the machine itself was not sufficient evidence."

The recording was given to Stillwater Public Schools Superintendent Walter Swanson, police said. The Oklahoman asked for a copy under the state Open Records Act. Swanson said the school system currently does not have it.

"Beyond that, I really do not have any comment," Swanson said. "I don't have it. If I have ... it, I'd have to make it available. But I don't."

Recording's fate not known
Swanson refused to say what happened to the video recording and whether he talked to Sutton about it.

A now-retired assistant schools superintendent, Deborah Tate, said she learned of the video recording from the schools' safety coordinator and "the superintendent directed me to have it brought to him ... which did occur."

"The people that I am aware of who saw the tape ... said that it was very poor resolution," she said. "I don't know if they destroyed it. I don't know what happened to it. ... I never saw it.

"It was just kind of a tumultuous time, if you will," she said. "There was some concern about, 'What's the deal?' "

Palladino last month showed reporters the available views from the middle school's security cameras. He said Sutton was recorded at a distance outside by a trash bin -- possibly at dusk -- at a time students were away. He said he did not make a police report and did not at the time tell the police chief.

"It's not a police issue. It's a school issue," Palladino said. "Only a few people knew about it."

He declined to discuss in detail what he saw on the recording. He explained he sometimes helps with security at basketball games.

Asked if he could tell what kind of a bottle Sutton had, Palladino said, "No. ... I showed you on the video how far away that camera is."

He did say he never saw Sutton drinking from the bottle.

Sutton has said he plans to seek treatment for his alcohol problem. He previously was treated at the Betty Ford Center in the 1980s.

Doesn't publicly exposing your genitals sometimes result in a felony indecent exposure charge? (See State v. Byron Houston)

Personally, I am against indecent exposure; however, it should not be a felony. Maybe that is why Adam and Eve were actually kicked out of the Garden of Eden.

The video does not show if someone else was around. Perhaps others were around in other areas of the school outside of the camera's line of sight.

I realize school was out, but what time of day was it? My niece and nephews used to go to their neighborhood school to play on the grounds even when school was out.

Iced tea? Yeah, that's what I do when I drink iced tea, I walk to the nearest public school to take a leak.
Does this really surprise anyone? I laughed at the way people acted as though the night of the wreck was his first drink in 16 years! Anyone else would have been arrested for ****ing outside a middle school....but not in stillwater. Makes you wonder how much covering-up has been done for this drunken idiot. Can't wait to see how the inbreds over in stoolwater will try to justify this one. Bladder problem? Unbelievable:rolleyes:

How many on a public school ground?

This is probably the final nail in the coffin. I was truly hopeful Eddie would have at least one more good year before retiring. He has always acted respectful of us, unlike the recent OFU football coaches before Gundy.

Those aggies who neg spekked me for my opinion, I am becoming more and more justified. WHile I understand alcoholism is a disease/mental dependency, this person probably never really stopped drinking after his tenure at Kentucky and he is at least a two-time loser at stopping drinking. I like how the powers of stoolwater have been hiding this for years... I wonder if they will be able to sweep all of this under the rug. If I were the "golddigging" woman who got hit, I would be demanding quite a bit from ole :eddie: and from LosuR as well...

Hey mojo, yeah. My high school had a fire hydrant painted on a back wall (it kept reappearing...) and the goal was to see how high, well you get the picture. But then we were dumb H.S. kids.

Drunk in College as well...

But as noted earlier, not at a school with a security camera...

Fair enough- I wonder what the hell he was doing at a middle school as it is-
of course- sounds like if he went of the wagon during Christmas which is probably the hardest time not too drink- he may have been drunk for a few months before shiate hit the fan.

The disease argument doesn't excuse what he did anyway. If he had to "succumb" to a drink....fine..but DO IT AT HOME! I doubt if he was ever off the bottle. So far we know the osu campus police helped him into his car the night he went on his rampage and injured an innocent person, and now we know he was exposing himself outside a middle school and that was covered-up. I think he could rob a stoolwater bank and the police would open the door for him and give him an escort back home.

Taking a leak does not equal exposing yourself, at least it shouldn't. One is a natural bodily function and the other is a sex crime, there should be a distinction.

For the record, the article said Sutton was urinating, but not necessarily while standing. This does not exclude him squatting or changing his adult undergarments in which nothing was exposed except plumber's crack. If that is wrong, Robert Allen don't want to be right.

If you are in the woods it is a natural body function with no other option for relief. Despite what we say about Stillwater, there are indoor restrooms and it is not a bad town. Pulling "it" out in city limits raises issues beyond alleviation of bodily wastes.

Here's some responses from O-State.com...Hilarity...

From GoPokes83: So Sutton's out for a walk with a bottle of SOMETHING to drink, ( Water, gatoraide, tea, pepsi, beer, whiskey...who knows what.) and he's got to relieve himself. He passes an empty school with no kids around so he goes around behind the trash cans and takes a leak.

BIG FREAKIN DEAL! Who hasn't answered the call of nature behind a tree, a car door, or an empty building when they had to.

If this was an issue why wasn't it adressed 14 months ago when the security guard initially saw the tape? There's absolutely no news behind this. Only an attempt to kick a man when he's down. Sad.

CowGirl25: I wish this would just go away already.

osuhog: Seriously, if he's over by the middle school at dusk, isn't it likely he was out for a walk, exercising, and had a bottle of water or Gatorade or something?

Anything is possible, but I would think the above scenario is much more likely than him out wandering around drinking a bottle.

I agree with GoPokes83...BFD.

Daddy_of_Aidan: Brings in OU... $o you are telling me you $ee no po$$ible rea$on for the $ecurity guard to bring up the $ubject 14 month$ later? I $eriou$ly doubt it wa$ $o the guy could get hi$ obligatory 15 minute$ of fame.

However, if you want to go all Consipracy Theory, you could consider it something the DO is doing to divert attention from http://www.o-state.com/forum/images/graemlins/ou.GIF's wrongdoings.

and...

KentuckyPoke: This is gonna be nothing I bet. We all know Coach Sutton was an avid walker. Unfortunately, the past month's events will lead people to think it was something else besides water, gatorade, etc. in that bottle. Do we even know what kind if bottle it was? No we do not. We should not assume anything. We all know what that does. They said the camera distance was too great to make anything out in detail. Now they could just be blowing smoke up our butts and covering something up or it could just be that. The distance was too great to decipher anything of detail. It also could be that some folks want it to be alcohol he was carrying. Nobody knows except for Coach and he is under no obligation to defend every little thing brought up. Let's not jump to conclusions about this and just wish Coach Sutton a speedy recovery.

The only bottle I would carry during a Dec.-Jan. walk at dusk is liquor. I doubt tea, gatorade, etc. is of much use when it is 40 degrees outside.

Besides, it is the perfect excuse.. Honey, I am going for my walk, followed by downing some hooch in private before coming home Honey, I am tired, I'm going straight to bed. Ask any married man, sometimes you have to hide that stuff.

I really don't think it's that big a deal, either. It's funny in its timing, but other than that there's not much there. It really IS more likely that he was just out walking than out boozing. Still, peeing in public is a crime.

I do honestly think this has been covered up for a long time, though. I'm disappointed in the aggies.

IF Kelvin is guilty of everything he's being accused of by the NCAA, it's STILL not even in the same galaxy as getting nailed for being 3x the legal limit and behind the wheel, going nearly 20 mph more than the speed limit and rear-ending someone.

By itself, the urinating in public thing would be minor, in a Larry Eustacy way (though I really doubt there's a store in Stillwater that wouldn't let Eddie use the bathroom. I also doubt Sutton is still an "avid walker" with his back in such bad condition.). But, it's not by itself.
