They do succ. Bad.

I never, very struggled with them until about 4 years ago and then BAM! they punked me out good. Had to get on drugs, nose spray - the whole deal. Took the meds for about a year and after still feeling like crap (albeit and different kind of crap) I just got frustrated and stopped taking everything.

I have no problems at all now. None. I have no explanation.

I guess I'm saying to be careful with all the junk they're quick to give you...after a while you might not need it.

Good luck, though. They sure can make you miserable...

I've been taking Claratin D and now Allegra D for many years. Sometimes when my allergies aren't bothering me I don't take it. But without fail, the allergies act up again even worse. And it's worse now than I can remember it ever being in the past. But GHP said his allergies are even bothering him, which doesn't happen much anymore because he's done the allergy shots.

I've always had allergies, but mine we not as bad as GHP's, so I never got shots for it.

Everytime I go outside it hits me so hard i feel like crying. I'm in such a bad mood from feeling like crap I skipped my zoology class and my afternoon band rehearsal today. oh, and I yelled at GHP earlier because he's never home. Even though he was really nice and did the dishes and got the mail so I didn't have to. :(

I've been taking allergy shots for two + years, and they've made a difference.

They won't cure you, but they make the allergies much more managable.
I'd strongly suggest giving it a try.

Maybe you're allergic to your brother? It could happen.

Seriously, hang in there. You're still young. Sometimes people outgrow allergies. For example, when cutting the grass as a kid, I used to tear-up something fierce, sneeze like crazy and the snot would pour forth like a powerful flowing thing. Only after a shower and a change of clothes would things begin to settle down. Unfortunately, it never got me out of cutting the grass. My parents abused me that way.

Now, mowing doesn't bother me.

I've only been medically proven to be allergic to hard work and shrapnel, but I do know many who suffer from allergies. Some are literally incapacitated by a variety of allergies, ranging from pollens to peanuts. Sad.

PG, I hope this season won't be so hard on you.

I take crack cocaine whenever my allergies start acting up. My doctor says if I keep it up, then I could be dead by the age of 40. :eddie:

GHP's are probably just as bad but since he's a man you don't hear him whining about them.

Our local NBC station has a story about to manage allergies without medications. As I am on day 8 of antibiotics for my sinus infection and still feel rotten, I am anxious to see what they say.
It is not on their website yet - I looked. :(

I'm not willing to wait another 20 years to see if my allergies get better on their own. especially when they have me feeling this bad (i've been in tears several times today i feel so awful) If they haven't gotten better in 20 I'm not holding out much hope. for the most part I avoid the allergens that REALLY get to me... the ones that are possible to avoid anyway (dogs, cats, strawberries, white tailed deer).

Cats - even with the shots, they still tear me up. I don't dislike cats, but
I sure can't hang around them either.

Ancient Sinus Remedy Helps Clear Congestion
Neti Pot Treatment Uses Warm Saline Rinse
Email This Story | Print This Story

Sinus congestion sufferers will try anything to get relief including pills, sprays and shots, but some North Texans swear by a natural remedy that is thousands of years old.

The neti pot treatment is born from yoga, and utilizes a mix of sea salt and warm, non-chlorinated water. Practitioners simply let the solution run up one nostril and out the other.

Allergy and asthma specialist Dr. William Lumry said the neti pot is the oldest form of saline rinse, and is urging more patients to try the remedy.

"We've learned over the last few years that simply rinsing the nose once a day with a nasal saline is a wonderful way to prevent sinus infections, to help with people's allergies, help sinus headaches and other problems with the sinuses," Lumry said.

Neti pot packaging comes in all shapes and sizes, but each works to clean bacteria, germs and pollutants from sinuses.

Congestion sufferer Erin Pack said neti pot works for her, even if it feels a bit awkward.

"It's not the most flattering position as far as sticking it up your nose," she said. "It feels like you're being held under a swimming pool the first time you do it."

Kathy Hurn, who suffers from asthma and hay fever, also said the technique works.

And for Sandy Pruitt, the treatment provides "immediate relief."

Neti Pot Nasal Rinse Recipe:
1 tsp. sea salt or kosher salt
2 cups warm non-chlorinated water

I know some people who swear by this.
And this my allergist, one of the top guys in Dallas. He is also heavily involved in research.

yeah, people keep telling me to try a saline rinse. If it was JUST my sinuses and I was feeling this bad I might consider it.
But since my eyelids and face are slightly puffy, I itch all over, and my hands/fingers are even a little swollen, I don't think that's going to do much for this particular case of allergies.

I think PG's growing into allergies. I can't remember her being this bad before, at least from anything that wasn't a food or animal. when I was a kid, merely opening the door to the house would make me break out in hives all over. I took 3 years of allergy shots and haven't had a significant problem since then. Right now PG is fine until she leaves the house, and if it's bad enough out there that it's making my eyeballs sore, it must be nasty outside.

yep. I walked MAYBE half a block to an advising appointment this morning and during the course of the advising session I went from sorta okay to itching all over and having a very difficult time breathing/swallowing/talking. I just went to the doctor and he prescribed a steroid pack for me. of couse, that'll probably mess up my plans to get allergy tests over spring break. at least i will be able to breathe though.

I go to the doc every spring and fall. His nurse gives me a shot in the butt. It's probably just saline, but it works like magic. I also start huffing flonase every day from now until first freeze.

Lots of time clearing up the breathing passages will help with a lot more than just stuffiness. If it's hard to breathe, it can make you tired/cranky/drowsy/etc.

As for the itchiness, is there redness? Or is it just a weird itch? You may have really dry skin or something. Since this winter has been so dry, I wouldn't be surprised.

My prescription ran out a while back, I'm still living off my stockpile. I need to have someone over at Goddard write a new prescription for Flonase and Advair both.

oh, possibly.

I bought some benadryl at walgreens and took it while i was on my way to the Norman Urgent Care center (because they have all my insurance info on file). I got slightly better from the antihistamine (even though it made me very wonky and drowsy later) and they prescribed the steroids. they offered to give em a steroid shot, but i don't like needles. that's what they would have done at the hospital--steroids or cortizone.

And needles are cool.

i could if I need to. It's getting better though. they gave me a nose spray too, and between that, the steroids, and the antihistamine, i'm doing okay for the moment.

If it's a medrol dospak, don't deviate from the instructions, it'll destroy your stomach - trust me on this.

I took the first six in eight hours, and spent the next three days in bed or in the bathroom. It was baaaaaaaaad.

I hope you get well, allergies suck and make life miserable. Taken as directed, the medrol should do the trick. A celestone shot is the bomb!
