here's the dealio.

i gave my father-in-law my old mcputer. he called me a few minutes ago asking what the "admin" password was for the OS (microsoft 2000 NT, i think). he's wanting to set a security log on for the machine.

the problem? i have no idea what the "admin" password is.......and he can't set up users without it.

is there a workaround for this?

(reacharound joke in 3, 2, 1....)

find ERD Commander, it's great for that

that or install XP if you are worried about security

2000 and NT are like Swiss Cheese now

Yeah, hackers have only had 6 years to find the holes in 2000 NT. and if no one bothered to change the admin account tell him to try either leaving the password field blank or type "password".

it's not really for security, just in an area that needs password protection.

any freeware that is similar to ERD commander?

is he using NTFS? i've seen a Linux boot disk that will let you change the password, but with NTFS, i haven't seen a Linux way to mount the filesystem in read/write mode

I used this disk today to get into a password expired machine. Worked like a charm.

You literally boot from the linux cd, blank out the password for admin, and
reboot windows. you'll be asked for the new password.

I'll find the URL and post it later.

ok, slow down.

as far as i know, linux was the kid on charlie brown that carried around a security blanket....

so i need to d/l the bd050303.zip, save to a CD, reboot from the CD, and it will ask me for new passwords?

The zip will have an ISO image, and you use your CD burning software's
feature to "burn image to disk", when it asks for the image to use, selct that one.

then boot from the CD, it pretty much goes through the instructions on that link I posted.

If ya got questions, lemme know.

get a 2000 cd and boot to recovery console

you might also try
http://www.loginrecovery.net

use the free option and you'll have your passwords in less than 2 days.
