Seniors led the way on Senior Night tonight as the No. 14-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club closed out the 2005-2006 regular season with a 5-1 win over St. Cloud State University. Senior defenseman Bryan Jewell started the scoring for OU with a goal at the 5:21 mark of the first period to put OU up 1-0. That score would hold through the first period and into the second before forward Justin Hall ripped a streaking slapshot from the right wing circle into the St. Cloud State net to make it a 2-0 game in favor of the Sooners. Senior Kelly Forbes scored a power play goal at 15:47 to make it 3-0 before SCSU turned around with a power play goal of their own to make it a 3-1 game at the second intermission. In the third, Owen Brewer worked hard on the penalty kill and scored a nifty shorthanded goal to make it 4-1 and Forbes capped off Senior Night with another goal, this one coming at 7:58 of the third, to make the final score 5-1. Sooners goaltender Tom Schaul had a relatively easy night in net, facing only 8 official shots and stopping 7 of them. On the other side of the ice, St. Cloud State goaltender Ethan Lyerly saw a lot of rubber, stopping 31 of 36 OU shots. OU was 1 for 2 on the power play tonight while SCSU was 1 for 7 on the power play.

Oklahoma’s Seniors, Forbes, Jewell and Shawn Webber, all played extremely well in their last home game before an appreciative crowd of 1,024. Each of the three Seniors was individually recognized on the ice during the first intermission by their teammates and Sooners Head Coach Larry Donovan in a short presentation during which each player was given a commemorative plaque and their home game sweater to thank them for their hard work and dedication to the OU Hockey program during their career at OU.

The No. 14 Sooners are now 19-11-2 on the season while St. Cloud State drops to 17-14-2. The Sooners’ next game is this Thursday at 10:00 A.M. CST against Iowa State University in the first round of the ACHA D1 National Championship Tournament in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
