"A pair of Poohs headline the Hutchinson Community College men's all-time team that was voted on by fans in late 2004.
The HCC Sports Information Office released the 11 players who landed on the team. There was a tie for the 10th position. The team will be honored Saturday during the Blue Dragons 8 p.m. game against Butler.
Roy "Pooh" Hairston, who led the Blue Dragons to their second and last national championship in 1994, is the school's career leader in seven categories, including points (1,687) and scoring average (23.1). Hairston was also the Most Valuable Player of the 1994 NJCAA Tournament.
Brandon "Pooh" Gary is the most recent player who was voted to the team. Gary was the top player for the last HCC team that won a Jayhawk West title, which came in 2004. One of the more underrated players on the all-time team, Gary became the fifth Dragon to have 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds. He was also the fourth first-team All-American at HCC.
Also making the all-time team were Ben Davis (1994); Henry "T" Buchanan (1984-1986); Steve Fritz (1986-1988); John Ontjes (1991-1993); Cody Walters (1987-1989); Teko Wynder (1971-1973); William Davis (1986-1988); Leroy Esau (1948-1950); and Maurice Brittian (1986-1988).
The college will also honor Opal Albright, a cheerleader for the first HCC men's team in 1928; Donna Broadus, an athletic secretary who has been with HCC for 40 years; and former coaches Sam Butterfield, Dick Gisel and Gary Bargen.
All honorees will be available to visit with the public during the chili and pie feed from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Sports Arena's small gym.
All ex-HCC players are invited to join the celebration at halftime of the men's game.
