STILLWATER - A dozen Oklahoma State students were arrested Tuesday and Wednesday in a drug ring roundup, ending a six-week undercover sting.

More arrests are to come, police say.

All students arrested are freshmen, ages 17 to 19, who live in campus housing. Five are from Oklahoma; six others are from Texas. A 17-year-old wasn't identified. As of Wednesday evening, police have one more arrest warrant to execute, for Mason Ross Moore of Tulsa.

Police were able to infiltrate the group with informants and an undercover officer. A drug raid of this size is the first of its kind at OSU, said Lt. Michael Metcalf of the Stillwater Police Department, which headed the raid.

"We've done some buys and search warrants up there before," Metcalf said, "but this is the first time we've been able to get an officer who blends in with the rest of the students."

Most of the students didn't know one another but were connected to a main core of dealers, investigators said.

The undercover officer was introduced to the group through an informant last month, Metcalf said.

"Quite honestly, it takes a certain officer to be able to do what this one did," he said. "A lot of them don't want anything to do with that. It's not their cup of tea. They have to be comfortable in doing it, talk the language and be able to relate to that age group."

The officer remains under cover.

Representatives for several state schools -- the University of Oklahoma, East Central University and Southwestern Oklahoma State University -- said they couldn't recall drug sweeps of this magnitude on their campuses.

The students will be allowed to continue attending classes, Shutt said. But they likely will be suspended from the residence halls pending a student conduct hearing, he said.

Many years ago in Houston, I asked the owner of my favorite watering hole if he could tell by his volume of business if the stock market gained or loss on any given day. He said it didn't matter. If the market went up, people celebrated. If it went down, they commiserated over drinks.
