View Full Version : Why do we still have pennies?

Okla-homey

...or nickels too for that matter. Why can't stuff just be rounded to the nearest dime?

IMHO, we only need dollars, dimes and half dollars. A pox on pennies, nickels and quarters.

How much would it simplify life? A bunch I tell ya.

Or Nickels, I hate'em

Wow, that has to be the shortest thread post that I have never read before posting!
Obviously, I am very opinionated on the subject.

We should drop pennies dimes and nickels and just go to bits. Just have 1 bit coins and then dollar bills. That should shore up efficiency at the mint.

Pennies give people something valuable to collect.

Without pennies and nickels every purchase you make would cost an average of five cents more. Why do you hate people who aren't Bruce?

I would pay the extra 5 cents to get rid of these smelly Lincolns!

They got rid of them in France. They still make them, but everything is rounded to 10 euro-cents. Much easier.

Yep. I'd appreciate the novelty of essentially having 12.5-cent coins.

Of course the U.S. still won't go to the metric system of measurement, you can imagine how hard it would be to get us to go metric money.

Might as well wait til we all have computer chips implanted in our bodies that allow us to pay by scanning our hands or something.

FOLKS, WE DON'T WANT YOUR CHANGE OR YOUR CHANGE JARS!!!

Neither do we.

And as far as I can tell, the only reason to have a teller work for my credit union is for me to have someone to hand my giant change jar to.

Frozen Sooner

Exactly. Stop handing those damn things in and we can get rid of the tellers and start paying some decent dividends.

But then after a few years my house will be overflowing with change. It will be like the end of Real Genius, except with nickles.

I think 85's commitment to customer service has rubbed off on you. ;)

Frozen Sooner
2/20/2006, 05:41 PM
See, that's the thing. People abuse the concept of "customer service."

There's a guy who used to come in to the branch with rolls of coin every damn day and exchange them for other rolls of coin. Then he'd sort through those looking for God knows what, reroll them, and bring them back INSISTING that we give him rolls that he hadn't looked at before.

Every damn day.

We're talking sizeable amounts of coin, so we'd end up having to take two people away from helping people to go to the vault and get more coin, THEN sort through to make sure he hadn't seen that roll before.

Just because France got rid of them makes me think we should keep them.

And how do you propose that people pay for their marijauna and illegal gambling debts?

I wish you would think this stuff through. ;)

when i was a teller at the bank, we didn't count change. we put it in a bank bag with a deposit slip and sent it to the main vault downtown and let them count it.

Look at you big-bank people with your fancy "downtown" and "main vault."

We didn't have that.

Our back office had all kinds of F'ed up things that they thought were appropriate, like:

We would only accept rolled coin (though we did have a coin counter in the lobby) but would have to unroll it and dump it in a bank bag to send to SecureTrans (who handled our Fed shipments.)

Proofing is best handled by front-office people while they're trying to help members in the branch.

Central Vault operations would be best handled by a branch.

****ing dumbasses. I hate them all.

Then he'd sort through those looking for God knows what...

Probably a red 1909 S-VDB. Worth $1750 minimum.

Back when my dad was a youngster, he'd get his paychecks in coins so he could look for rare ones - got quite a few that were worth a bit.

Of course the U.S. still won't go to the metric system of measurement, you can imagine how hard it would be to get us to go metric money.

OK, first off, our money is "metric", by which you actually mean "decimal". As in, 100 cents in a dollar. If our money wasn't decimal-based, we'd be England with 12 pence to the shilling, 10 shillings to a mark, and two marks to a pound, totaling 240 pence for a pound. Completely screwy and not at all based on powers of 10.

Frozen Sooner
2/20/2006, 09:00 PM
I think IS was joking...and what kind of decimal is it when we have FOUR quarters to a dollar? Huh? That's not decimal! That's quadary!

Just implant us with the new Intel six sixty-six chips in our foreheads and we can all spend our money electronically.
