I'll be in Salt Lake City on business in about 6 weeks. I'll have little time, except for a free evening or two. Any suggestions for sightseeing?

I basically just want to see the Mormon Temple, I guess, and I don't even know if evening visits/tours of it are possible. Anything else?

You can't get in the temple. Nobody is allowed in except Mormons with a special pass.

AFAIK the closest you can get is the outer courtyard.

Don't expect it to be terribly easy to find a beer. Other than that, I hear it's quite pretty.

I grew up not far from there in what we non-mormons called the "shadow of the temple" (Idaho). We made fun of the statue of Brigham Young with his back to the church and his open hand out to the bank. Temple Square is worth seeing, they have a huge statue of Jesus if you're into that sort of thing.
Me, I'd go to Park City for the day. SLC is like a Scandinavian city with tall blonde women everywhere.

Mormon temples are like Masonic lodges -- no admission without a dues card (although they call it a Temple Card) and you gotta know some secret stuff too.

IMHO Joseph Smith directly lifted a lot of Masonic ritual into his funky new religion...handshakes (aka "grips"), signs and symbols, aprons, penalties, closed meetings, etc.

I second the Park City suggestion. You can also go night skiing at Brighton- about 35 minutes away. Since you only mentioned having evenings and such.

Dude, you've clearly not been to Utah. Canyonlands and Arches are freakin' awesome. Monument Valley not too shabby either. I've never been "up north" but we're going to ski Park City in a few weeks.

It's a vast wasteland.

No place for brothers, except the Jazz.

Or Starbucks! :D

Give us a report on the strip clubs, too!

Also, bring home some Utah rations, you know, just to be safe in case of the apocalypse! ;)

No more than an hour at a time.
