I would tell you what it is but then I'd have to listen to all the pencil necked geek know it all one-upmanship saying you shouldn't have done that and I would get a _____ instead BS.

It will have a pretty cool 21'' monitor though and for the money I'm very happy.

The wife gets that piece of crap I bought last Christmas.

:D

Dude, you should've gone for the 23" flat panel. But I'm sure yours is nice too.

And I hope you didn't get suckered into some pansy amount of RAM; like anything below 4GB

SoonerWood
2/16/2006, 12:00 PM
And if it's not a dual core 4Ghz then it really can't be considered a gaming machine.

hope you checked out maingear :D

I was told anything more than 2 gig of ram is just overkill.

I was gonna do 4 but thought why burn the money.

Was they wrong?

Oh carp, I've been pulled in!

current games don't take advantage of dual core processors

Future ones will ;) Besides, if you have an OS that takes advantage, then it can schedule the game on the second core, and everything else on the first core, so "everything else" isn't sucking resources the game could be using.

As far as 2GB v. 4GB goes... if you don't need it now, don't bother. By the time you DO need it, the RAM will likely be much cheaper and you can always upgrade then.

They also told me the processor I was getting was a 64 bit, I think, and it will be able to run the new Windows OS.
That's a lot of words for me to remember though.

AMD?

I'm getting ready to build a new one, and plan on using a new dual core 64 bit AMD processor. RAWR

Yep, AMD.
That's my first but I got convinced it was far better than a comparable Intel in my price range.

and?

AMD pawns Intel when it comes to Gaming (and most anything else)

shrug, for the time being, 64 bit is meaningless in the Windows world. Almost nobody crunches numbers large enough to justify it, almost nobody has filesystems large enough, almost nobody has memory banks large enough.

The real key to the AMDs being better is that the architecture is better. The cores are directly connected at core clock speed instead of having to communicate via the system bus (which is typically much slower than the CPU speed), and iirc, the cores also have distinct connections to the memory banks scaling the amount of memory bandwidth with each CPU/core installed -- assuming the motherboard has sufficient connections to allow for this.

In first grade english, it means that the more processors you add, the better the AMD system will be compared to the Intel system.

At 2xCPU, AMD systems have ~2x memory bandwidth. At 4xCPU, about 4x. Intel chips memory bandwidth stays constant.

Also, because the Intel cores have to go to the bus to communicate with each other, any time a process on one core needs to communicate with a process on the other, it has to do so at the speed of the bus (which is usually 50% as fast or worse). AMD's can do it at the full speed of the CPU.

In short, AMD multiple core systems scale better and handle multiple processes better.

The PC is priced right, I think. (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7623896&type=product&id=1130986103611)

The monitor's only 250.00 w/ this system... (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7481511&type=product&id=1125466651583)

And I'm sticking in this video card. (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7634795&type=product&id=1130987444322)

Not the greatest but seems pretty good for the money.

Tell me how dumb I am now.

the integrated memory controller on dye is the most important part of this because it cycles the memory faster and it runs memory at cpu speeds. the key component of this though is have cas 3 or lower ddr in dual channel mode. if memory isn't up to par, the advantage starts to slip.

I prefer Nvidia over ATI. I've got a few friends that have had trouble with some games using ATI video. I can't recall which games though.

As for processors, the rule of thumb I've always used was that AMD are better for games and CAD, where Intel is better for audio and video editing.

heh

Looks like a good machine. But I am not the BEST at this. I build my own, but don't do HEAVY gaming or anything.

The only thing is that it's short on Video memory, but you took care of that.

I would disable all the crap in the startup and delete pre-installed crap.
I personally don't have the know how for a home built job or the cash for an elitist gaming rig.
This oughta do, I hope.

It'll do quite nicely and keep you gaming at least for the next few months. :D I'm using an AMD 3.2Ghz, 2GB RAM, 256MB Nvidia 6800 and it'll handle anything I throw at it.

Well the Nvidia was quite a bit more $$$ if I remember right.
The service guy touted the ATI 512 meg card as being darn good for 300.00.
However, I may get them to honor this internet price and save 250.00 over the store price.
Any suggestions on a card they have?
I gotta keep the whole mess under 2K.

Our tech guy here's telling me to stick with AMD and ATI and not match AMD with Nvidia as there can be conflicts with the chip sets or something.

Got my new thing last night.
Not overly impressed yet but need to get a DVI cable to replace the VGA connection before I knee jerk the system to the return counter.
It does seem pretty fast at high res with all effects turned on though.
