Sean's wins will be Eddie's

By John Rohde
The Oklahoman

Oklahoma State head coach designate Sean Sutton has coached three games this season, and his career record is 0-0.
Though Cowboys coach Eddie Sutton is on a medical leave of absence the remainder of this season, his career record remains active through his son.

Before Monday night’s game against Kansas was played, OSU sports information officials determined this season’s results would count toward Eddie Sutton’s career record.

Although Sutton has not worked during the Cowboys’ current two-game losing streak, those losses and all remaining games this season - including any in the postseason - will count toward his career mark, which currently stands at 794-311.

“Basically, it’s up to the university,” said NCAA stat man Gary Johnson, who compiles the official men’s basketball record book. “We talk to the school and try to get it settled before the next game is played.”

If Sutton were to formally resign before this season ends, his career record officially would end at the time of the resignation - unless it comes in the final week.

“If there are only a couple of games left in the season and a coach resigns or is fired, we’ll still give it to that coach,” Johnson said.

It’s a judgment call and there has been controversy.

Twelve games into the 1994-95 season, ailing Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski had back surgery after a 9-3 start. The Blue Devils went 4-15 in Krzyzewski’s absence and that record was given to interim coach Pete Gaudet.

Some have claimed Duke instructed the NCAA to saddle Gaudet with the 4-15 mark so not to negatively affect Krzyzewski’s career winning percentage.

“That didn’t happen,” Johnson said. “That was all settled before one game was played (without Krzyzewski). People made such a big deal about that, but it was all decided before the first game. If they had continued to have a .750 record, that all would have gone to coach Gaudet.”

New Mexico State coach Lou Henson’s record remained active last season even though he didn’t coach due to viral encephalitis. Hansen resigned with 12 games remaining in the season and that’s when his career mark officially ended.

Weak. Sauce.

That's like John Holmes getting credit for all the times I......oh nevermind.

So Eddie will have maybe 1 more win at the end of this year. Won't make much difference.

If you believe all that has been said about Eddies' health and Sean doing most of the recruiting and coaching already then he has been reired for the last two years or so now. That was proably the deal all along ,Sean gets Daddy to 800 wins by coaching for him the last few years and Grandpa T.Boone guarantees him a HC job.

That would be pretty weak to get your 800th win in the NIT Tourny while sitting at home watching the game on TV.

Are they even going to make the NIT?

Oh, he's done way more than that.

Oh, you meant WINS! :D

No way the Cowboys win 6 more this season. Even if they did, Sutton's 800 win record would mean as much as Michael Strahorn's single season sack record.

If Sean gets him to 800 wins won't they have to put a * by it saying Eddie was drunk.

Wins should not count when Sutton isn't on the bench (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/seth_davis/02/16/hoop.thoughts/index.html)

There is no official NCAA protocol for how a school should record games in which the head coach is incapacitated. It's up to the university to keep its records however it chooses. This puts Oklahoma State coach Eddie Sutton in a strange quandary. On the one hand, even though Sutton will not coach the Cowboys again this season (and maybe ever), this is indisputably his team. That would mean the wins and losses should count against his career record.

On the other hand, doing so could mean Sutton would reach a significant milestone under highly unusual circumstances. And nobody wants a milestone that comes with an asterisk.

Sutton has candidly said that part of his motivation for coaching this season has been so he can win his 800th career game, which only four other Division I coaches (Dean Smith, Adolph Rupp, Bob Knight and Jim Phelan) have done. At this moment, Sutton stands at 794. The way the Pokes are playing, it's far from assured they'll win six more games (Oklahoma State is 13-12, 3-8 in the Big 12). If the Cowboys did, the sixth would probably happen during the postseason NIT. Imagine the scene: Eddie Sutton gets his 800th win, but it comes in the NIT and he's not even there. Wouldn't be pretty.

Oklahoma State basketball SID Mike Noteware told me this week that OSU will continue to count its games on Sutton's record. This is far from unprecedented. New Mexico State did the same thing for Lou Henson after he was too ill to coach his team. Ditto for Kansas State and Rutgers regarding the records of Jim Woolridge and Gary Waters, who each missed time in the last week (Woolridge for illness, Waters because his flight back to New Jersey from the Midwest was cancelled by last weekend's blizzard in the Northeast). And it should be noted that the losses OSU incurs will also count toward Sutton's record, and there will probably be more of those than wins the rest of the way.

There is another important element at work here: Sutton is not yet in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Sean Sutton believes his dad would have a better chance of getting into the Hall if he got the magic 800. Maybe I'm naive, but I disagree. Eddie Sutton will get into the Hall of Fame regardless of whether he "wins" six more games.

Therefore, I believe Sutton should tell Oklahoma State not to count any future wins toward his career record while he is out. If he can't get number 800 from the sidelines, it's not worth getting. If anything, not counting those wins might make Sutton an even more viable candidate for enshrinement. It would, after all, be the good-sport thing to do, and the sport is what the Hall of Fame is supposed to celebrate.
