Boy, sometimes I get so made! UHF/VHF antenna

so, I go buy a $25.00 philips UHF/VHF digital antenna.
Not big money mind you but we are in a town with towers for the ABC, CBS, NBC stuff.
I go buy this antenna with the idea for having a t.v. in the basement in case of bad weather. Well, the switch on the back of the antenna has two arrows in the same direction and it says cable/ Ant. So, right off the bat you don't know which way the switch is suppose to be.
I also get one that happens to be used. the poles are really loose and the cable connection is loose.
I get online to find out where to point the darn thing and I get nuttin'
I am fuming right now.

If it's bad enoguh to warrant hiding in the basement, you probably want a battery-powered radio anyway.
