What is this nonesense? Did you know that you're supposed to pay OK sales tax on all out-of-state purchases intended for in-state use? I kinda sorta knew if you bought stuff online you were responsible for the sales tax, but this applies to anything. If you go down to Dallas for a shopping weekend or something, you're responsible for paying OK sales tax on all the durable goods (i.e. not food) you buy. You get a credit for sales tax paid to another state, but if that is less than the OK tax you have to pay the difference. What a bunch of bull****.

huh? So if we buy something on Amazon.com, we are supposed to be paying tax on it to the state of Oklahoma?

What the hell are you bitching about? Pay your taxes.

Don't most states have this?

Yes, unless Amazon.com pays the tax for you. A lot of online sites already charge you the appropriate sales tax. Retailers with a physical presense in a state (i.e. BestBuy.com) are required to charge sales tax for that state.

Apparently it's not just online stuff, either. If you buy something out of state and pay a lower sales tax than your home rate you have to pay the difference to Oklahoma.

so how much did you report?

If you believe the Oklahoma tax instructions all states that charge sales tax have something similar. I'm sure the Oklahoma version is more ****ed up than most, however.

All of my out-of-state purchases last year were made at a sales tax rate equal to or higher than Norman, so I'm reporting diddly squat.

Yup, if you buy a book at O'Hare airport on a layover, you're supposed to pay taxes on it in Oklahoma.

Only if the sales tax is less at O'Hare, and the book is "for use in Oklahoma". I figure if you finish reading the book before you land at Will Rogers it's all good. If they're going to nickel-and-dime us with bull**** like this, feel free to parse every word of the law to your advantage.

I guess the same principle was at work when I had an internship in TX one summer. Thankfully my accountant told me to make sure they took out OK Income tax on my earnings in TX. If the income tax is greater than OK's you have no worries, if it is less you have to pay the difference. Bastages.

On the subject of taxes, TAXengine.com (http://www.taxengine.com/?WHO=OK) is an e-filer endorsed by the OTC with an income limit of $50,000 for free filing. This is higher than some other e-file services. All of you Bruces out there are still out of luck.

Next thing you know Oklahoma is going to set up customs checkpoints at all border crossings.

Do you have anything to declare?

Of course, just like weigh stations and rest stops they won't have the money to maintain them.

Bruce used that when he was six for his paper route. Since then he's made too much to use it.
