for the second time with my wife. (I know, I'm a little behind you guys in seeing it.) Anyways, we missed the ending the first time because our cable was messing up. So far I've got a kick out of it, it's pretty damn funny. But we're trying to figure out what year it's supposedly staged in. They talk Kip talks about being On-Line...but everyone still looks like they're dressed for the early 80's. Anyone got a clue?

They live in rural Idaho. That's what folks are like in the present day up there. People in rural areas don't bother to stay up on trends and decor as much.

Ahh...makes sense. Thanks. Well, I look forward to seeing the last part of the movie. The other day our cable kept blipping out right when he started dancing on stage, I was ****ed.

My parents still have a console TV and buy all their clothes at Wal-mart. Maybe southern rural folk are more sophisticated, but not up here.

Aint nothing wrong with having some Wal-Mart clothes. Most of my slacks are from Wally world

However, they are wearing the same Wal-Mart clothes as 10 years ago.

Modern times, though the 70s-80s feel is part of the off-beat humor of the movie, sort of making Idaho seem like a place caught in a time warp. The references to being online and chatting and "chimichangas" are all modern day phenomena.

yeah that was good too...someone posted that clip on here a long time ago and even though I hadn't seen the movie at that time, I thought that clip was funny. And when Napoleon tried to kick at that one guy by his locker a good 10 seconds after the guy had walked off.

Yeah that was classic. That part and the part when the bike ramp collapses under him got the biggest laughs out of my wife.

Back to the original question of what time period the movie is set in....

My sister and I were trying to figure this out for the longest time. Aside from Kip's online dating, everything else screams 80's. When I watched the DVD with the commentary turned on I realized the movie is set in the present, but the screenwriters used a lot of childhood memories in it.
