while driving up to OKC yesterday, i was surfing the radio between ardmore and purcell, searching for something to listen too (my cd wallet was out of reach)

i picked up a journey "two-fer".......and thought, Steve Perry has one of the best "pure voices" in rock music

so, who besides him has a "good voice" in the rock and roll genre?

Recently or a while back? I saw them in the mid 80's and he sounded great, but I think I read he had some serious throat health issues since then.

I don't really like chick singers in rock bands. for me the percentage of female singers I DON'T like is far higher than the percent i like. It's the opposite with guys.
possibly because I can't sing along with most chicks.

I do like Chrissie Hynde from the Pretenders.

Nab'R
2/10/2006, 11:58 AM
Chrissie used to be a punk rocker. There was a cool Punk Rock documentary on IFC. She said basically that punk rockers in the 70's were kind of defined by how they couldn't play very well. When you stay together and play for a while, you tend to get better and then, by definition, you tend to not be punk rock anymore. That's why a lot of those bands didn't hang around.

Kind of like Chrissie and the Pretenders. They learned to play better and got less punk.

Anyway, it's a cool documentary.

I'm a *heeeyyyyuuuuuggge* DT fan, and I dig James' singing a lot. But it's hard for me to put any canuck at the top of the list. Reason: mostly their vocals are tailored to their bands' music. LaBrie. Geddy Lee. Rik Emmett. Michael Sadler. Canuck singers tend to sound squeaky-nasal because of their dialect. In picking out the singers I did, I was trying to think of who's voice has that classical quality that can go across different styles of music.

I had the chance to see Foreigner and Bad Co. in concert a few years back; Paul can still bring it like nobody's business, Lou has since been replace with a newer model. Steve Perry will always be the man. Maynard can scream with the best of them, but can still give you chills. Layne had the most evil voice EVAR, but "Down in a Hole" made you realize the pure talent. I like the mention of the Keane frontman. I can't seem to get Hopes and Fears out of my car right now. Good stuff.
