Well, I'm not a serviceman either. I am gone four months at a time, and it is an open ended contract so if it doesn't work out than I am outa there!

But if it does, and I have a feeling it will, then I will stick with it for a couple of years at least. (Unless the war ends, ya right!)

Seriously, though, two things: 1 - as many cartons of Marlboros as you think can reasonably fit with your other stuff. Those things are like gold in the Middle East and you will make a lot of friends.

2 - take a lot of crisp new $1 bills. They work *great* as tips for any kind of service you can think of, and they go over very well. Trust me, you *will* be treated better if you do that. The culture in that part of the world is very, ahem, financially driven.

Hey DC . . . if you ever got the bit torrent thing figured out you could always download past seasons of your favorite shows or current ones for that matter and rewatch stuff if you don't have TV.

Hopefully you'll have access to a high speed innerweb connection and can catch up on your shows via torrent spy, torrent reactor, or tvtorrents.

Two words...

Pop-Tarts. They are delicious, have a shelf-life of infinity, and are good anytime. Trust me on this. They became a form of currency (along with Copenhagen) in Afghanistan.

Also, No Pron..violates a USCENTCOM general order (it infuriates the more devout Islamic-type persons) and is thus a court-martial offense.

batteries, batteries, batteries.

powdered drink mix. Your choice. It makes the water easier to go down and you'll be drinking tons of it. Go for the no-sugar kind if you can stand the taste.

cards and chess men if you play.

Zip lock bags. Big ones. With them, you can keep the sand and dust out of stuff. For example, an iPod, CD or personal DVD player not stored in a zip-lock bag when not in use quickly succumbs to the micro-fine sand and crap floating in the air.

Bring every non-pron DVD you own. Even if you're sick of a flick, somebody else will want to see it. Just pull them out of the box, slip them into one of those storage binders available everywhere here, and you'll be happy and popular. Note: take a sharpie and put your name on all of them so you get back the ones you loan-out.

Finally, a few books you've always wanted to read but never had the time. You will now.

If I think of anything else, I'll post it.

DC, you'll be fine, man. I buddy of mine from college just got back from Baghdad. He's been over there with Halliburton for about two years. Before that, he was in Kosovo. The dude pulled down hella jack for going over there.

If you're a civie on a base, you're safe. The only people that get kidnapped are the idiots who run around without protection or too little protection.

Also, I've got a cousin going to Camp Anaconda just north of Baghdad in a couple of months. He's army reserve, but in communications. He'll spend most of his time on the base.

The thing is, the terrorists don't attack the base. They know they'd be slaughtered. They stick to car bombs and other cowardly things.

Okla-homey
2/9/2006, 01:59 PM
I agree with others who have said you'll have a lot more available to you now that the exchange system is well-established. Most of the stuff I mentioned is just your "basic load" so you won't have to go buy that carp right after you get in-country.

Seriously though, just about any piece of personal electronic gear you take is going to get trashed so plan on it. The zip-lock bags just postpone the inevitable. OTOH, you'll have all that sweet hazardous duty and combat moolah, plus no income tax while deployed, so you'll have stax of cash to buy new chit when you get back.

You should be safe at Anaconda. It's huge, like a little city. The terrorists might lob a mortar at it every now and again. But, the Camp is like 20 or 30 square miles, so they never hit anything. here's how it will work:

Brat gives us a mailing address -- it can be at her work so she doesn't have to sweat being stalked or anything. We send her stuff to send DC. Once a month, she goes to one of those pack-n-ship joints and has it all mailed to DC's wacky-Iraqi overseas address. Phil (HMFIC) pays the shipping from sponsor receipts. How sweet is that?

Who's with me?

Abso-frickin'-lutely. We must have your APO so we can send you SO Care packages. I can only imagine the kinda stuff which will be included. I nominate the uber-bubbly Soonerbrat to be in charge of collecting said goodies for monthly mailings to DC who will be counting the days until he returns to "the world" very soon.

Guys, that is awesome. But don't we have some posters that are actually in an armed service over there? I would feel bad, our salarys are going to be a wee bit different.

But if not, hells ya!! :D

D00d, if they exist, and they posted their APO, we'd send them chit too.

we ain't talking big buck chit anyway. Just fun cheap stuff you'll miss, like Charmin TP, maybe a bottle of good BBQ sauce, a new release DVD. A package of Peeps and a chocolate bunny at Eastertime. The Sooner Football media guide when it comes out in June. You know...America baby.

I would take a dozen stuffed animals that are each big enough to hide at least 2 priceless Babylonian artifacts that you should be able to pick up on the blackmarket. I mean if you're going for money you really should maximize your efforts.

That's worrisome. If it's about the money I think it would be safer just to stay home and sell your blood twice a week.
