OKLAHOMA 2, LINDENWOOD 1

The No. 15-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club finished the road sweep of No. 6 Lindenwood University with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory on Saturday evening in suburban St. Louis. Lindenwood got on the scoreboard first with a goal at the 5:05 mark of the first period and looked like they were going to rout the Sooners as they rang three shots off the post in the first 15 minutes of play with a swarming offense. However, the Sooners withstood the Lions attack and held Lindenwood scoreless for the rest of the period. In the second period, OU seemed as if was on the penalty kill all period long as there were 6 separate Lindenwood power plays in the middle stanza. Sooners goaltender Aaron Schmeilski and the Sooners penalty killers stood tall as they held the powerful Lions offense scoreless throughout the second period to keep the score 1-0 in Lindenwood’s favor after two periods of play. In the third period, the Sooners turned on the offensive pressure and eventually tied the game when forward Owen Brewer tipped in a shot from the point to make the score 1-1. Almost three minutes later, while the Sooners were killing off yet another OU penalty, Brewer stopped a Lindenwood blue line shot and sent a pass up ice that popped fellow OU forward Adrian Borchgrevink free for a short-handed breakaway. With a Lions defender hanging on Borchgrevink’s back, Borchgrevink deked the Lindenwood goalie to the left and slammed the puck into the right side of the Lions net to give OU a 2-1 lead. Lindenwood had a few flurries of offensive activity late in the game, including a furious 6-on-4 opportunity with the goaltender pulled and another Sooner in the penalty box during the last minute of play but Schmeilski slammed the door on Lindenwood for the second night in a row to secure the 2-1 victory for OU. Schmeilski was outstanding in net for OU, stopping 50 of 51 shots Lindenwood shots he faced and allowing Lindenwood only 1 goal during the entire weekend. Lindenwood goalie Grahame Lippert also played well but took the loss as he stopped 24 of the 26 OU shots he faced. For the second night in a row, neither team scored on the power play. OU was 0 for 6 with the man advantage while Lindenwood was 0 for 11 against the Sooners penalty killers on the evening.

The No. 15 Sooners are now 16-10-2 on the season while Lindenwood drops to 21-11-1. The Sooners return home to face No. 11-ranked University of Arizona next Friday night at the Blazers Ice Centre.

THAT IS AWESOME, I JUST FOUND OUT WITHIN THE LAST MONTH THAT THE SOONERS PLAYED HOCKEY. MY FAVORITE NHL TEAM IS THE RED WINGS, SAME COLOR AS OU. I AM GLAD THAT WE ARE DOING GOOD.
