...who used to smoke.

My BIL said not to smoke a cigar...I bought a couple thinking I'd smoke them playing golf and/or while having a few beers. He said by tomorrow, I'd likely be smoking cigs again if I did. Is that true? I figured cigars would be safe since you don't inhale them and after having a few beers, I'm tempted to puff on a stogie (stop it) but I hate to **** up my streak....10 days and counting.

I don't know who Stewie is but I can still smoke a cigar and not want a ciggy-poo because I associate it with two different things.

I waited almost three months before I tried a cigar. I wouldn't recommend trying it right now. Remember, you have to "want" to quit before you actually can quit.

I can do without it....just thought it might curb the urge. I didn't want to quit and I didn't intend to quit; I just quit. I had bronchitis and my doc said quitting smoking would be a good thing and I read online that smoking can turn bronchitis into chronic bronchitis, so I just thought I'd see how long I could go. I'm at 10+ days now and even though I still have a craving, it has been a lot easier than I thought it would be.

i'd wait

about 6 months after i quit, my dad came for a visit, we went out for a nice dinner, he fired one up and the smell of the smoke alone triggered my desire to have a cigarette

Damn! I knew that's what you people would say.

It's probably best. I've been doing so good, I don't want to mess it up so I will refrain. When I smoked and "needed" a cig, I could always feel it in my chest....that's where my urge has been since I quit; I always have that feeling in my chest. Not sure what that is or how to get around it but that's pretty much my only problem so far.

I'm doing well....thanks for thinking of me....about a week and a half now. When people I knew tried to quit they always whined about people smoking on TV or in movies or out on the street or whatever...I always thought, pffft...don't be a *****. Well, I was wrong. Since quitting, I've noticed people smoking on TV, in movies, out in public, at work, etc.

Although I have never done it myself, I've known people who by the sugar coated/tip cigars and just chew on them without lighting them up and they said it helped cure the craving's a lot.

I've noticed this recently. I'm also in the process.

But for some reason, the surgeon general says Skoal isn't a safe alternative...

It's going to be an uphill battle. Mrs Mj smokes, her mom smokes, my BIL smokes, his wife smokes, etc.........

But...my biggest fear was this weekend. Coming down here, I always drink beer and we usually play golf....both activities I do where I smoke a lot. Well, I had a couple beers last night and did okay. Played golf today and did okay (except for freezing to death) and I'm having a few beers tonight and I'm doing okay. It's not REAL easy, but it has been easier than I expected.

Since I was a teenager....probably 20 years. I was never a super heavy, heavy smoker but I probably averaged a pack a day.

That was actually for Mjcpr, but since you asked, it's a little download that you put on your desktop, that helps give you some positive reinforcement while your trying to quit. http://www.dedicateddesigns.com/qk/screens.htm

For example: Based on smoking a pack a day at $4.08 per pack (that includes tax)

Mine Reads:

Quit Time: 5 Months 2 Weeks 12 Hours

Days Quit 167

Cigarettes 3,350 = number you haven't smoked

Money Saved $683.44

Life Saved 1 week 4 days

Interesting. Another BIL of mine quit around the same time you did, KC. His dad had a quadruple bypass around that time and it convinced him to do it. At the 5 month mark, he's really gung-ho about it....he gave me a pep talk last night. :)

More money and life in visual terms. Sad I've already payed those bastards that much money for a probable earlier expiration date.

Put down the stogies Mjcpr:

Cigar smoke contains about the same cancer-causing agents as cigarette smoke and has a much higher concentration of tar and nicotine.

Regular cigar smokers have 3 times the risk of lung cancer and 4 to 10 times the risk of dying from cancer of the larynx (voice box), mouth or esophagus (tube leading to the stomach) as nonsmokers.

Cigar smokers who don't inhale still absorb nicotine, which increases their risk of heart attack and stroke.

Secondhand smoke from cigars is just as damaging as smoke from cigarettes.

I smoked many, many years ago and always had a sinus infection. Finally figured out that I was allergic to cigarette smoke!! I wasn't a real serious smoker so it wasn't too hard for me to quit. I think other than the obvious risks of smoking, the worse part of it is the stinking smell. Not only your mouth stinks, but you get that nasty smell in your hair and on your clothes - and you stink up everyone who comes around you. My car was out of commission a few weeks ago and I had to share a ride to work with a smoking coworker. Nothing worse than getting up in the morning - showering, washing your hair, smelling good and then hopping into a car with a smoker. Horrible way to start the day. You reek of smoke all the way to your undies (and then some!!) Hang in their Pat - you are doing a good thing by quitting. It's worth the trouble!!:)

I work with a guy who has smoked for 30 years was going to quit.Went and bought patch's I think he about had it licked didn't have patch one day bought a cigar. Then he started smoking cigars daily and wearing patch later on decided to dip skoal to quit cigar's no workie.Went to cig's I have seen him with a patch on smoking with a dip in. But I really don't think cancer could survive in his body and he seems to be as healthy as as a horse. Moral of the story quit something before starting other habits, it could go into death spiral.

Good job MJ! I quit back in 1987 and since have gained about 40 lb's, It's unbelievable but I may have been a bit better looking then, than I am now. One BIG reason I quit was because my daughter was 3 years old at the time and VERY allergic to cigarrete smoke.....one of the better reasons to quit was that I just wasn't quitting for me but for all the people around me. My wife has never smoked in her life and come to think of it I don't know of any bad habits she's ever had.....except for me.......Hang in there, you can DO it!

My father never smoked a cigarette in his life, but enjoyed an occasional cigar, and now he's got bladder cancer. The doc says most cases are due to tobacco use, in all its forms. I'm trying like hell to give up the Copenhagen, but its hard to do.

ive had a 1/2 a cigarette in the last 5 days, once i dump this habit its on to the snuff. i quit both cold turkey together for about 3 years and was really proud of myself cause of how hard it was. i said i would never do that stupid sh*t anymore. i enjoyed it so ****in much im gonna do it again

I quit cigs as a regular habit shortly after graduating from law school. Several factors led me to pretty much cold turkey it (with one significant relapse). 1) my wife hated it, and made me go outside. We were living in a place with really cold winters at the time. 2) I had gotten up to 1 pack a day and prices were going up, esp. because the state we were living in upped their tobacco tax by like 50%. 3) Health, of course. 4) I noticed that food was starting to taste funny, and I hate that.

It wasn't really that much of a pain to quit. After a few weeks everything smoothed out. I can even be around people smoking and *not* want one. I have smoked a cig occasionally since, and it inevitably reminds me why I quit in the first place. :P I did find one other thing to be true: beer tastes much better if you *don't* smoke while you're drinking it. Especially if it's *good* beer. I notice flavor subtleties I'd never sensed before.

As far as cigars go, I do indulge once in a blue moon, but the doggone things are too expensive for anything more than occasional use. But a good cigar and some cognac is hard to beat in the luxury category. Cigars don't remind me of cigarettes; they smell and taste completely different. Must be the lack of the additional deadly chemicals they put in cigarettes, and the fact that the tobacco quality is like 100 times better. That having been said, anyone who inhales cigar smoke on purpose is asking for it. They are meant to be puffed and enjoyed, not internalized.
