They want to kill somebody because they drew their "God". It could have been a serious drawing and they'd still want to kill the author. They can draw the underlings, but not their God.

If the guy who did the cartoon had taken a moment to do smidge of Islamic cultural homework, he prolly wouldn't have done the cartoon. Having spent a bit of time in that loony corner of our planet I learned something rather interesting.

Not to justify their violent rage, but perhaps to help explain it, Arabs and Persians have for centuries typically observed a Koranic self-imposed ban on "graven images."

That's why otherwise decorative and valuable carpets from that part of the world don't usually incorporate images of animals or people. Mosques are never decorated with any portraiture. Copies of the Koran don't have any pictures either.

Therefore, an image of Mohammed or even a Biblical prophet, especially one that appears to mock him, would be perceived on the Arab street as extremely insulting, sacreligious, heretical and could get you killed.

just saying.

No, its actually more about knowing your enemy.;)

I'll tell you another little story. About 24 years ago, I helped some squadronmates paint a mural in our building. The mural involved the flags of all the countries who had ever had officers who had flown with us. There were quite a few since we were a training squadron.

When it came time to paint the Saudi flag, we made a stencil out of plain brown butcher paper in order to get the Arabic inscription right on the flag. The saudi flag incorporates a verse of scripture from the Koran that is translated as: "There is no God but Allah, and Mohammed is His Prophet"

http://img392.imageshack.us/img392/2138/saudiflag2ix.gif (http://imageshack.us)

Anyway, after we were done, we just crumpled-up the stencil we made containing that verse and I was getting ready to toss it when a Saudi lieutenant happened to walk up. He about shiite his flight suit. He asked for it, we gave it to him, and I guess he burned it or something.

He didn't try to kill us or anything because he knew we didn't know any better and did not intend disrespect.

Homey learned a very important lesson early on in his career. Them Arabs is verrry touchy about their religion.

Here's the thing. Folks who are hard over, I'm talking unwavering in their view they're dead right and the other side is dead wrong, are often pretty shallow people who are too lazy to at least try to see the other guy's side.

Sometimes its not just simple laziness, but its more because they may suspect their view is flawed, and they are actually kinda scared to find out they may need to alter their comfortable, familiar world view and they find that terribly unsettling.

That sort of thinking, or more specifically the lack of thinking, has been the source of a great deal of suffering and sorrow on this big blue ball we all share.

That said, after a some analysis, introspection and an honest attempt to see the other guy's side fails to persuade or soften your view, then feel free to smoke 'em. :D

Bear in mind, this guy is Americanized as you can get, drinks, throws dirty leg, etc. When he saw it, he didn't think it was funny in the slightest, so I have to assume it is reallly bad. He said it would be like a major Arab paper putting Jesus, the Devil, a priest and George Bush in a sexual situation. It is the so blasphemous that he doesn't agree with the violence, but isn't surprised.

Arab papers frequently print some pretty nasty stuff about jews and Americans. I have seen more than one cartoon with a Jew eating babies and crap like that, so if they want any sympathy they need to look at themselves first.

Yes, but it goes a little deeper than that. They actually called for "A day of anger and violence" to protest someone labeling them as violent.

I did the M-16 tour of Saudi, Kuwait and Iraq in '91. I've seen all their crap firsthand too.

I'm tired of having to apologize to the rest of the world about their stupid culture. When are they going to suck up and change to conform to our culture and beliefs? Why is it always the West that must be respectful of them?

The Saudi's wanted us out of Dodge as fast as possible, so they could resume their public stonings, female circumcision, and other barbaric practices without Western scruntiny and observation. Watching their "Religious Police" beat some teenage males for not getting to prayers on time was all I needed to know about that piece of crap culture. Or seeing some Saudi Mini-Mart owner not sell my driver (a young female E-3) a soda because of some stupid reason ticked me off. He finally made the transaction when the butt of my M-16 broke his fricking counter shelf.

Bomb 'em all and steal their oil.

We Christians went through our "jihad phase" in the Middle Ages and got past it. The Muslims are still living as if the last 1000 years or so of world history didn't happen. Stuff like this just shows the corruption and complete detachment from reality that is Islam.

There's far too much sucking up to the Arab world going on here in the US, especially when our president keeps on legitimizing Islam in public speeches, and here our government is using this as a political opportunity to score points by condemning the cartoons.

I, for one, applaud the stance that the European nations are taking. Yes, they're taking heat (literally) for it, but they're not backing down, and in the process the Muslim religion is being shown for what it is. Hypocritical and empty of anything except hate and revenge.

What do Christians do when something comes out in the media that's patently offensive? The "Book of Daniel" controversy is a good example. We preach the truth as set against the falsehood being published. We vote with our viewing habits, our wallets, and our election ballots. We educate, or try to. We *don't* go blow up the TV station.

Anyone who says all religions are the same is living in dreamland.

Pretty funny paragraph.

Even if you were overcome with a sudden urge to burn the Danish flag, where do you get one in a hurry in Gaza? Well, OK, that's easy: the nearest European Union Humanitarian Aid and Intifada-Funding Branch Office. But where do you get one in an obscure town on the Punjabi plain on a Thursday afternoon? If I had a sudden yen to burn the Yemeni or Sudanese flag on my village green, I haven't a clue how I'd get hold of one in this part of New Hampshire. Say what you like about the Islamic world, but they show tremendous initiative and energy and inventiveness, at least when it comes to threatening death to the infidels every 48 hours for one perceived offense or another. If only it could be channeled into, say, a small software company, what an economy they'd have.
