Joaquin Phoenix SHOULD be a cinch winner.....here's why:

Philip Seymour Hoffman, "Capote" - so he plays a gay guy? who here doesnt have a straight friend that can "spot on" imitate a gay guy? we all do, big deal.

Terrence Howard, "Hustle & Flow" - never saw it....however, did he have to learn to play guitar and sing? no? didnt think so.....

Heath Ledger, "Brokeback Mountain" - see Philip Seymour Hoffman - those of us here in texas all have friends who own ropers, a cowboy hat and can do the funniest impression of a gay guy ever....big deal

David Strathairn, "Good Night, and Good Luck." - no idea, did he have to learn to play a guitar and sing? no? didnt think so......

Did Val Kilmer win it for "The Doors"?

But he learned how to drink, do drugs, and sing.

If Joaquin doesnt win, the Oscars are a joke.

Moreso on this category than the Best Picture one, but that too.

I have a hard time seeing Johnny past his hared lip.

I think/hope he'll win, with Hoffman as an outside shot, sort of a "you've done a lot of great work, any now finally something you can win for" award.

i'm really surprised how little it has apparently hurt him

That's already been proven many times.

If Joaquin really cared about being Cash, he would have found a way to grow 6 inches taller.

If Jake and Heath cared about their careers, they would have played straight cowboys. :texan:

and suppossedly Tobey Maguire was hittin it during Spiderman 2 filmage....then again, that might explain Jakey being in BM ;)

Can anyone who's seen Brokeback tell me why Heath's up for Best Actor and Jake's up for Best Supporting Actor? Was Jake the catcher or something?

yeah, as far as the initial analysis in this thread goes, there's more to acting that imitating someone... i really don't think it's as straightforward as some people wish it to be.

and a side note--the scar on Joaquin Phoenix's lip isn't a "hare lip" it's a birthmark.

that's just crazy talk right there :P

and jk don't worry, Terrence Howard won't win, he's just the token black nominee. We can only have 1 winner every 6 years or so at min. and we already had Jamie Foxx last year ;)

How do you 'splain Hallie and Morgan?

I would like Hoffman to win from what I've seen of his performance.
I kind of feel like Straitharn should win too. He has done some great stuff as well as Good Night...
He was a wicked ****ah in Delores Claiborn.

Contrary to popular belief, the scar on his lip is not the result of a repaired cleft lip or palate. It is simply a birth mark. Phoenix has stated in interviews that, while pregnant with him, his mother felt a sharp pain one day, and he was born with a mark on his lip.

The farting isn't the problem

It's the oil slick you leave behind.

Did they have olestra in Wyoming in the '60s? It would have come in handy.
