So, my son has decided that he might sell his silver collegiate trombone..it's in great condition...how much should we ask for it?

Depends on the make/model. Do you know what kind it is, or can you get a picture of it?

i can get a pic of it tomorrow..it's in good condition
he'll probably keep the mouthpiece, but no one really buys used mouthpieces do they? yuck.

Nah, not usually, but it's been known to happen. You just scrub some Listerine on it and it won't hurt you.

Do you at least have a brand name? That'd be a good start.

Ah, that would make it a Holton collegiate trombone, according to a google search.

Model number? If it's a TR 602 (student model, no valve) probably in the $350-$400 range, depending on condition. The TR 680, 160, 150, 158 (has a valve) would be in the $700-$900 range, depending on condition. The TR 183 or 181 (bass trombones, 1 or 2 valves) would be around $600 (one valve) or $1200 (two valves).

Those are just guesses based on current prices on new trombones. Really good condition, you might get a bit more; if it's beat up, knock a few hundred off.

Is it like this one on eBay?

that one's not in the best condition, but they got a crappy price for that. A horn even in that condition should get $150 to $200 (if the slide actually moves) if you sell it to a specific person rather than put it on eBay.

not sure about the model number but he says it doesn't have a valve

Yeah, probably just a student model trombone then... if its in really good shape I wouldn't expect more than $250 or so for it.
