Some of you might remember discussion back on December 7th on the plan to find a permanent home in OKC for USS Oklahoma's anchor.

Here's the dealio...I'd be interesting in hearing from OKC locals if this Campbell Park is indeed a nice spot.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- City leaders who rankled some World War II veterans after moving an anchor from the USS Oklahoma hope they have found a permanent home for the relic.

The 10-ton iron anchor was salvaged from the ship that capsized following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941.

It stood in downtown Oklahoma City for more than 40 years, but construction on the Skirvin Hotel forced its removal. The anchor now lies in the grass at Campbell Park, just north of downtown.

The Oklahoma City Council soon will decide on a plan to make the move permanent.

The Oklahoma City Community Foundation has taken the responsibility of moving the anchor and coming up with a display at Campbell Park.

I wonder why they don't put it down on the Bricktown River somewhere.

I was thinking the same thing.

It's in a nice area. The benefit to this location, as opposed to the former location in front of the Skirvin (and at the river, for that matter), is that there is plenty of parking within close walking distance for vetrans and others to come visit and for the ceremonies throughout the year.

Campbell Park is at the intersection of 13th & Broadway, just north of Automobile Alley. A lot of development is taking place from 5th street, north, on Broadway.

I'd imagine in the future, there might be some other military monuments (bronze statues, granite storyboards, etc) located in the park as well.

In the time being, it is kind of sad to just see the anchor laying on the ground.

Thanks. That is good news. I guess they really aren't worried about anyone stealing it for now. 20,000 pounds of steel would be tough to haul off and selling it would be even tougher.

Is there space to put it at the OKC Bombing Memorial? The idea of two of the worst attacks on Oklahoma being together in memory is somewhat inticing.

Then again, I remember that at the entrance to the Kirkpatrick hands-on museum is a propeller from the USS Oklahoma.

Nice thought, but I think they just need to put it by the Historical Society building.
