Frau Anna Maria Mozart. Leopold Mozart's wife and mom to Maria Anna "Nannerl" Mozart and the brightest musical light the world has ever known, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

On this day, 250 years ago in Salzburg Austria, 28 year old Frau Anna Maria Mozart was recovering from the previous day's delivery of one of her only two children who would survive to adulthood. This was in an era when pain relief medications were not available to common folks, therefore, she was probably feeling pretty rough. Despite this fact, she arose from her bed and accompanied her husband Leopold, their daughter and the new baby boy to his baptism at the cathedral in Salzburg.

Salzburg, in the shadow of the Austrian Alps

Frau Mozart was a fascinating woman in her own right. Anna Maria Mozart's two surviving children Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Maria Anna Mozart, were both unquestionably musical prodigies, although Wolfgang would quickly overshadow his big sister.

Frau Mozart was born in St. Gilgen, Austria in 1728 to Eva Rosina and Nicolaus Pertl, deputy prefect of Hildenstein. Her mother (and Wolfy's grandmother) Eva was widowed and left penniless when Anna was quite young causing her and her siblings to be raised, more or less, in the Salzburg poorhouse.

Eventually, Anna encountered the dashing and very self-assured Leopold and married him in 1747 when she was 19. They had seven children of which five died in infancy.

As stated above, their daughter, Maria Anna "Nannerl" Mozart, was a talented musician too, but her abilities were quickly eclipsed by the achievements of her younger brother.

Anna was not noted for her own musical talent although she was married to Leopold Mozart, a composer and violin teacher of international repute and the mother of two prodigiously talented children.

While Frau Mozart was from a humble background and had practically no formal education, she was remarkably observant and educated herself by reading just about everything she could get her hands on including scientific journals and the great literature of her day.

A nighttime view of Mozart's hometown.

Frau Mozart was fluent in French as well as German and could manage in Italian as well. It was her presence and influence that made the rented rooms in hotels and inns in which Mozart spent much of his young life and early musical career into homes as they toured the great cities of Europe.

It is understood as well, that Mama Mozart was a practical and loving mother who sometimes had to make Leopold "chill out" when he pressed their young musical genius child too hard.

She lived just seven months past her son Wolfgang's 21st birthday, and died on July 3, 1778 in Paris. This woman, born destitute had met all the crowned heads of Europe and had even developed a friendship and correspondence with Maria Therese, the Austrian empress.

Mozart loved her deeply and while she was very ill and practically bedridden, he dedicated his Symphony no. 31, the so-called "Paris symphony" to her. It is called the "Paris" symphony because that is the city in which it debuted and absolutely triumphed. Anna rose from her sickbed to be in the audience on the night the work of the then 21 year old composer was first performed . She died two weeks later.
