No matter how many times I see "The Shining" (14 now?) I still get the heebie jeebies.

That's pretty impressive when you know what's fixin to happen.

Is there anyting that can surpass it?

If any of you younger hilbillies haven't seen it I strongly suggest go do.

The book is scarier to me. It moves slower and builds the suspense.

[b]Phantasm[\b] always freaked me out as a kid...maybe it was the yellow blood.

Rob Zombie's 'House of 1000 Corpses' was beyond disturbing. I have a morbid facination with wanting to see the sequel 'The Devil's Rejects', but not sure if I want to suject myself to any more of that or not.

Not really scary, but the torturous gore is way over the top.

"The Shining" is definitely a scary movie, a scarier book, but it's not really "disturbing".

The ones that disturb me most are those movies dealing with torture and outright cruelty - those I will not watch. Just the previews of Hostel disturbed me more than the Shining.

Disturbing:

Old naked lady
Murdered children
Elevator of blood
Redrum
All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.

etc. etc etc.

'Hostel' was pretty disturbing, too.

In their time, probably Psycho and The Exorcist.

As a kid The Legend of Boggy Creek and Phantasm freaked me out pretty good.

Also, The Hills Have Eyes and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre were pretty creepy.

It was disturbing when the guy dressed in a bunny rabit suite late in the movie was blowing someone else and they were all ghost's. That was the tip of the iceburg and relatively disturbing?

The Ring was indeed disturbing, but I found Jacob's Ladder to be moreso.

Also, I'd throw Manhunter in there, the original "Red Dragon" with Hannibal Lector as a supporting character, and William Petersen (CSI) as the lead.

Although I thought "Hannibal" was fairly disturbing, it was nothing compared to the book.
While I was reading the book, I actually had a nightmare that the cannibal was about to dine..........with me.
Without a doubt, that was the scariest book I have ever read. The ending was more frightning than the movie.

Same here. In fact, I grew up near Fouke so I know all about the legend.
The thing about that movie is, it's not what you would call a classic "horror" movie. Yes, there's some "jump out of your seat" moments but it also mixes in a little comedy with a few campy songs. I also like the "documentary" feel of the movie as well.
Little bit of trivia: The narrator in the film, Vern Stierman, was a longtime weatherman for the local NBC affiliate in Shreveport, which also has an office in Texarkana. At the time, the local anchor from the Texarkana bureau, George Dotson, also has a cameo appearance in the film.

Phantasm freaked me out as a kid, definately...I bought it a few years back and still watch it at least once every 6 months. It is a classic IMO.

As far as disturbing, I started watching one a few months back called High Tension, it was a foreign horror flick, I watched it up to the point of the crazy guy breaking in the house and shoves a guys head through the staircase bannisters, then sliding a big cabinet down the side of the staircase until it takes his head off...the wife made me stop it there. Of course this was after multiple questionable scenes..it started out like a soft core pron horror flick. Anyone else see this...is it worth re-renting and watching when the wife is not around to make me stop it???

I miss the good old days of campy horror flicks, today they just try to gross out.

So did anyone go see The Descent this weekend? Report please if you did.

Does anyone remember an old made for TV movie in the 70s where a woman had a bunch of little monsters in her house? It scared the ****e out of me then, but I have no idea what it was called. I'm pretty sure it was on ABC. Some of the old Kolchak:Night Stalker episodes rattled me pretty good too.

Edit: I found it, it's called Don't Be Afraid of the Dark

Anyone remember a movie from the mid-1980s called Cat's Eye? It was based on a collection of Stephen King stories and was done in three parts.
The first part was about (I think?) a guy that couldn't stop smoking so there was this group of scientists that used him as an experiment where he got shock therapy every time he would smoke.
The second part was about this rich man who lived in a penthouse that made a bet with an ordinary man that he would get a suitcase full of money if he walked around the ledge of the entire building. While the man was on the ledge, some pigeons would be on there pecking at his feet (since I don't like birds, that sort of scared me). The guy finally made it all the way around the building but the rich man stiffed him. That got the other man ticked off and dared the rich man to walk around the ledge himself. Naturally, the rich guy couldn't do it, the pecking pigeons forced him to fall from the building.
Then the final installment of the movie had a young Drew Barrymore (just a couple of years removed from E.T.) taking in a cat but an evil troll lurked behind the wall of her room. The troll was pretty disturbing, and in the end, was killed off by the cat in an epic showdown. Of course, Drew Barrymore and the cat lived happily ever after.

Movies that have really creeped me out (and I'm not young):

1. Hostel (2005): This movie is just plain creepy, especially the eastern European setting.

2. Don't Go in the House (1980): This move really warped me mentally after watching it. It's hard to watch people burning alive in real life, let alone in a movie! What a sicko!

3. Phantasm (1979): The flying ball really creeped me out in this movie and gave me nightmares.

4. The Exorcist (1974): Linda Blair was flat-out tortured in this movie. The head spinning round moment just creeped me out.

5. Starship Troopers (1997): While this is really going out in left-field, the humans being dismembered by aliens was pretty darn creepy to me, with its shock value.
