Google's senior policy counsel, Andrew McLaughlin, says that "while removing search results is inconsistent with Google's mission, providing no information (or a heavily degraded user experience that amounts to no information) is more inconsistent with our mission."

So, in the end, Google is no different than any other U.S. company - talk free market enterprise, but freely do business in a country that quashes freedom for anyone but the rulers of the country.

Yeah, real cutting-edge stuff.

google's actions in china certainly don't seem to comply with its motto "do no evil", however, It should be pointed out that EVERY US search engine that is operating in china has agreed to do the same thing. Yahoo I think was the first to capitulate. If MSN is over there too, you can bet that they are doing the same thing. From what I understand, companies are not allowed to operate there without agreeing to censor certain search results.

Mjcpr
1/27/2006, 02:14 PM
I bet the US version is censored as well. We just don't know it because we can't Google it to find the answer....because it's censored.

It's a vicious circle of untruths and engimas.

OklahomaTuba

Goggle's "Do No Evil" slogan became BS when the founders (self proclaimed environmentalists) decided they needed a Boeing 767 as a personal jet.

By obstructing the government from perusing those who consume kiddy porn and now bending over for commies, they really have shown to be supa hypocritical.

Still, damn good product they put out. Just wish I had bought that stock when it first IPO'd.

for a slightly more rational look at the situation, see this BBC op/ed piece, which I'm sure you'll dismiss out of hand.

Well, the BBC is the biggest POS news operation in the world. Glad my taxes aren't going to support it. Nevertheless I thought this was kind of dumb:

Different circumstances require different responses, and just because sanctions were the right way to put pressure on apartheid South Africa does not mean that a technology blockade is the way to influence China.

Seems to me the only people that want to block anything is China, and well Google.

Thanks. Definitely an interesting take. Here are some lines that are pretty good points, IMO...

But if we in the West, with our liberal political culture and our attempts to build open societies, do not engage with China then we lose the opportunity to influence them and convince them of the benefits that this brings.

and

Different circumstances require different responses, and just because sanctions were the right way to put pressure on apartheid South Africa does not mean that a technology blockade is the way to influence China.
Constructive engagement in a way that respects but also challenges local law seems a far better option

I have to agree with that last line.

In Through The Out Door

for a slightly more rational look at the situation, see this BBC ...

Oh. All I had to do was see that the BBC produced it to realize it wasn't going to tell me jumping jack flash. It's like being told, 'Yeah, but the New York Times says...' No one outside of the beltway cares what BBC/NYT think.

Anyway, no matter how you slice it, Google is no different than any other company professing to be for free markets, but selling out to China.

It's not a knee-jerk thing. It's just realizing that no matter what business people say about their politics and/or ethics, when it comes to putting more money in their pockets, they'll do just about anything. Kind of like people who claim to be environmentalists but who live in houses in cities...and drive cars...and wear clothes...you know, the damn-the-manufacturers-for-polluting-the-environment-but-ignore-my-SUV-and-house-in-the-suburbs crowd.

No big deal. Just admit you've changed your policy to make money off the Chinese. Everybody else has. No reason to pretend that you're not doing so as well.

Does anybody really give a ****? I'm mean really, it will not effect me in the slightest if Chinese people cannot look a picture of the protest. This will do nothing to stop their steady march toward democracy, which is picking up lots of steam and we all see it. So I could pretend to feign moral outrage but at the end of the day, I don't care at all, and neither do any of you.

Yes no cares about the BBC or the NYT, that is why each has their own television station (one that broadcasts the entire globe) and sell more papers than anyone in the world. Seriously, that is like me saying no cares about the Wall Street Journal's op-ed section, just because it takes a different slant doesn't mean it isn't influential, or respectable for that matter. Except for cable news, all of it sucks ***.

Once again, don't care. You mistake me for a bleeding heart, which I am for American interests, I believe in American exceptionalism. Sure, I wish China would address their human rights issues, and I don't like how much pollution they cause, but they hold the strings to their destiny, not Google, not America, and not Bush. People get the government they deserve, sad but true.

How do we all figure the Chinese version is censored? Maybe you aren't getting any image results because you're NOT FREAKING TYPING IN CHINESE. And why is it odd for Chinese people (who probably live near Tiananmen Square) to post touristy photographs of the area on the internet? Track down the chinese-character equivalent of "tiananmen square protests" and search with that, and then you might have some grounds to argue that they're censoring the website.

Seriously, think things through a bit next time.
