You think Schmitty would allow anyone in that type of shape to play now?

You are an ignorant little man. A piece of skin wrapped around a whole bunch of stupid.

He could run your *** down to this day (saw him a month or two back). Just because he has a belly doesn't mean he couldn't flat out play the game.

I agree he could play the game. He was a 3 time all american and 4 time all conference. But today Schmitty would not allow that fat to show. It was complimenting our current strength coach more then anything

It took about a month for it to look like that. If you don't believe me I have photos from a basketball game the next month after I got it. The shirt was just as bad.

The run of his life
By JOHN E. HOOVER World Sports Writer
8/1/2006

Rivals Johnny Rodgers and Greg Pruitt relive a well-known play
Johnny Rodgers and Greg Pruitt, two of college football's nimble-footed Hall of Fame legends, spoke on the phone just the other day.

Rodgers is writing a book -- "An Era of Greatness," about the four years (1969-72) that started a 35-year run of success at Nebraska -- and wanted Pruitt's input on the Oklahoma-Nebraska rivalry. Pruitt, an OU All-American in 1971-72, had plenty, mostly on one of the game's unforgettable plays: Rodgers' 72-yard punt return touchdown against the Sooners in the 1971 "Game of the Century" showdown in Norman.

"He asked me if there was anything I would do different," Pruitt said. "I told him, 'Yeah, I would stay in my lane and break down.' "

Pruitt takes responsibility for letting Rodgers get started on his first-quarter touchdown. Ten other Sooners can shoulder some of that. But Pruitt was the upback "gunner" who sprinted downfield to cover Rodgers on Joe Wylie's punt.

Rodgers and others -- ex-Nebraska coach Tom Osborne, former OU coach Barry Switzer, Heisman-winning running backs Mike Rozier and Billy Sims -- will attend an Aug. 14 event at the Renaissance Hotel hosted by Tulsa Sports Charities and billed as Legends in Sports

Rivalries.

No rivalry was bigger than OU-Nebraska, and Pruitt and Rodgers only added to it.

Pruitt had met Rodgers the year before at a Kodak All-America function, and the two became fast friends. Then as juniors, they talked frequently. Rodgers bragged about the Huskers being voted No. 1 all season; Pruitt boasted about the Sooners usurping a greater and greater percentage of those votes in the weekly poll.

So when 10-0 and No. 1 Nebraska and 9-0 and No. 2 Oklahoma met at Owen Field on Nov. 25, 1971, Pruitt wanted badly to back up his words. He got his chance when OU's first possession of the game lasted just three plays and Wylie went out to punt.

Rodgers ran up to field the punt at the NU 28, shook off a tackle by Pruitt at the 30, regained his balance at the 29 and jitterbugged to the right. Of the 11 Sooners on the field, Pruitt had the cleanest shot -- really, the only shot.

"Because of my personal relationship with him, and wanting to have bragging rights, I probably wasn't disciplined enough to break down and do what I was supposed to do. He got me all hyped up," Pruitt said. "I did not break down. I went after him. So I broke that chain."

"He definitely did," said Rodgers, "and I knew it beyond a shadow of a doubt. We had bets on it. I knew he was going to be coming. And I never fair-caught. I knew if I could catch it and get past that first guy, then it was going to be on. I was just lucky."

A hole opened up in the OU coverage unit, and Rodgers went through like a mouse through a line of hungry cats. Eight Oklahoma players were behind the 32-yard line yet as Rodgers approached the 35.

To Rodgers' right was one blocker, running upfield. To his left was another. Directly ahead of him was an official. All three worked to his advantage.

"Next thing I know, I had the referee right there in my way," Rodgers said. "He forced me back to my left again, and I saw one of the defenders right there, so I broke back to the left to the sideline and just started kicking on it."

One of the defenders was Wylie, who had safety responsibility. Wylie had had a bead on Rodgers but had unwittingly let John Adkins get behind him. Adkins peeled back and, as Wylie pivoted to go back to his right, sealed Wylie off.

Sooner fans still claim that Adkins' block on Wylie was but the first of two clips -- illegal blocks in the back.

"My shoulder pad actually touches (Rodgers') knee as I'm going down," Wylie said. "But the reason I'm going down is because (Adkins) came back and blocked me in the back."

As Wylie pivoted, he turned his back to Adkins at the last moment. Many officials don't interpret that as a block in the back.

Meanwhile, Rodgers headed for the left sideline like a bottle rocket. One Husker blocker, Joe Blahak, hustled down ahead of Rodgers as Rodgers raced down the sideline and OU receiver Jon Harrison closed in.

Harrison would have no doubt caught Rodgers at around the 25, but Blahak executed what the 63,385 Sooner fans then (and more now) consider a second clip: He cut off Harrison at the OU 34, less than two yards from Rodgers.

Blahak approached Harrison from in front of Rodgers and made contact with the front and side of Harrison's right shoulder pad -- again, with the interpretation of no block in the back, even though Blahak ended up on Harrison's back as Harrison dove for Rodgers' feet.

"I could see Joe coming and he was coming hard, so I knew somebody was right there on me," Rodgers said. "There was really no way it could be a clip because (Blahak) was in front of me and went past me. To clip, he'd have to come from behind me."

Said Pruitt, "Although they did have some questionable blocks on the play, it shouldn't have gotten that far."

There wasn't much good to remember during the Blake years, but the 1996 Texas game was one. James Allen almost single-handedly won that game (not downplaying the role of other players, but Allen - for all his troubles - stepped up in that game).

Incredibly, the Sooners forced another Longhorns punt, and took over at their 46 with 1:11 left. Allen then took a pitch around the left end and scampered 45 yards to Texas one-yard line, but the play was called back for an offensive holding penalty, and a huge break for the Longhorns.

That, my friends, was an incredible run. Too bad it was called back.

So, at the end of regulation, the score was tied at 24, the exact same score as last year's game. However, also new to college football in '96 was an overtime rule, but not sudden death as in the professional ranks, which gave each team an opportunity from the 25-yard line until a winner was decided.

Oklahoma won the coin flip, and then chose to play defense on the opening possession, and Texas lined up at the Sooners' 25. They lost one yard on their three plays, and Mackovic and company settled for Phil Dawson's 43-yard field goal, and a 27-24 lead. It was now up to their embattled defense.

Oklahoma then lined up at the 25, and it was Allen that carried the load, having already rushed for 112 yards after the first half, including 76 on eight carries in the fourth quarter. First, Allen picked up ten yards, then two more, and then three. Faced with a third down-and-five from the ten, Fuente threw a screen pass to Allen in the left flat, who then broke safety Chris Carter's tackle at the line, and turned it into an eight-yard gain.

The Sooners had first-and-goal at the Texas two. On the next play, his fifth straight, Allen took a pitchout through the right side and into the end zone as the Oklahoma fans erupted. It gave the Sooners an improbable 30-27 comeback victory in one of the greatest finishes, and upsets, in the long rivalry. While the Sooner Schooner led a wild celebration, only their second victory over Texas in the last eight games, the Longhorns were left lamenting missed opportunities in a game they had in hand.

Unfortunately, that game gave me hope, which was quickly and cruelly ripped away over the next two years. :(

Regarding the picture of Bud Wilkinson hugging Monte Deere: According to Bud's son, Jay, Bud kept very few OU pictures after he left coaching, but this one of Monte Deere was posted on his office wall. It was taken in 1962 after OU beat Kansas and Bud considered it such an important victory on the way back to success that he chose to remember the win with this picture.

Could some of you great photo folks add from the incredible 2014 Sugar Bowl to my all-time favorite thread ? TIA.

Sealing the deal.

I know this is a little absurd to say but the deal would have been more sealed had he been short of the goal line. One QB downing and game over. By scoring we were forced to turn the ball over to Bama. Returning that deflection for a TD and onside kick and Bama's in business.

Don't get me wrong I'm happy for Grissom. Just wanted to point out the irony of that ruling.

Yes, but the risk was *extremely* remote with a 2 TD lead and only 45 seconds left and no Bama TOs. About as close to zero chance of a Bama comeback as you could get. Can't fault a player for getting excited.

Heat of the moment... notice the Bama tackler was trying like hell to tackle him, which would have sealed his own doom. You gonna tell a defensive player who just gutted out the game in the trenches not to go for glory in the last minute?

I didn't say that. Just pointing out the irony of the excitement over the TD ruling. I would prefer Grissom to protect the ball a little better though. The ball did come out later and had it happened earlier it could have been disastrous.

But in general I don't like guys stretching the ball out so much especially in traffic where it can be swatted away. Remember Peterson's fumble in the Oregon bowl game...

I am glad for Grissom.

Another way to look at it is that Grissom knew the only way he would have another opportunity to sack McCarron was by scoring the TD.

Same thing as the Boise State game, except it worked out this time. Every time I see that game I'm begging Marcus Walker to down that pick at the 1, make BSU burn their timeouts, kick the FG & leave them w/ about 10-15 seconds to get into FG range.

I was hoping for the same thing back then, but this was a very different situation. We needed points to beat BSU, but not so with Bama. Almost no risk in Grissom trying to stretch a 1 TD lead to 2. The sack itself essentially ended the game even if Bama recovers - most their time expires just trying to get all the receivers back to the line just to run another play.

If Grissom recovers and then fumbles that would be two change of possessions and the clock would have stopped. Also if it's recovered in the endzone they would get the ball at the 20 and a first down.

True, that would be the greatest risk and still minute. Fresh downs wasn't their problem - it was remaining time, distance and pass protection. I guess if that Henry guy picked it up and ran through OUr entire defense for 90 yards it would have been a problem. And that almost seems plausible!
