He isn't at LS Tech. He was there for about a week and left for the Arena League..... He will be serving fries fairly soon would be my guess.

Funny, Brodie Croyle, DJ Shockely, and Derek Anderson ranked ahead of Whineart??? Then Joe Mauer, isn't he the kid who opted for the MLB draft and is the new "phenom" catcher for the Twins? People say he is the re-birth of guys like Yogi and Bench.......brother Jake also for the Twins?

There are a lot of really good players who had/are having great careers on that list. And there are some that were never heard from again. Typical.

Correct the other 2 4 stars in 2000 were JC players DE Marcus Chreitan DB Terrence Simms

So the next time somebody comes up with Oklahoma is struggling in recruiting then they should look no farther then 6(2001), 7(2000) or 8(1999) classes ago now compared to our Senior, Junior, Sophmore and Freshman going into 2006. It is light years atleast on paper. It should also tell you that Bob Stoops is a ALOT BETTER COACH then Mack Brown.

Yeah that is why 90% of the guys who will be drafted in the 1rst Round in the NFL draft this year were 4 and 5 star guys out of HS and not 1, 2 or 3 stars.

For the last time, who gives a flyin' f*** about the NFL? Seriously, as an OU fan, I'd much rather see a Jason White come in, tear opponents up, win the Heisman, etc, regardless of his not being in the NFL. Sure, it's nice to see our guys perform well at the next level, but pro status is not the single measure of football success.

Because regardless of what we think, kids look at the NFL before they choose schools. If we want to get the good players (J-dub was a 4* I believe) we need to send some to the next level, otherwise we won't get any respect.

Uhh, couple of examples for ya.

Think of this year's class. McCoy might not even be considering OU if it weren't for Tommie Harris. If we get McCoy, every Sooner fan should thank Tommie, I think he will have something to do with Gerald's final decision, maybe not a big "something", but that relationship has got to be in the back of his mind...

Also, if you listen to the LB's we get every year, they ALL talk about how they love the fact that Brent has, what, 8 LB'S in the NFL, with Ruuuu and Zach sure fire NFL LB's of the future......

The Consumate Showman
1/27/2006, 04:15 PM
And, OU is slowly becoming a BREEDING ground for great WR's(clayton, bradley, jones, t-money, and we know M.K. will be playing on Sundays along with, possibly, Iglesias, long shot, and Huggins), something that will obviously help us in the coming years........

OK, OK, I understand the arguments, I agree that it does help recruiting immensely. I get a little irritated every time the whole NFL thing pops up, mostly because I realize it means that much to the actual players. Kinda undermines what we cheer for and dedicate time to. Perhaps I am just too enamored with the concept of being a traditional football power, the pageantry etc. but I guess we all in some way have to be a pro factory like Miami these days, 30K crowds be damned.

Thank God we're Oklahoma, and that still means something to a lot of kids.

NormanPride
1/27/2006, 04:26 PM
I feel ya, man. I hate the early entrants as well, but you've gotta think of the kids. I know if I had a chance to bolt and make a quick million or 12 to help my family out I would.

I'm just thankful that the NFL requires three years out of HS...

jkm, the stolen pifwafwi

Yeah that is why 90% of the guys who will be drafted in the 1rst Round in the NFL draft this year were 4 and 5 star guys out of HS and not 1, 2 or 3 stars.

but 90% of the guys we've had drafted in the 1st round WEREN'T 5 star guys. personally, i'm really sick of the whole early entrant thing. it can absolutely wreck the position for 2-3 years after it happens.

The whole thing about recruiting rankings is that they try to measure potential. The kids they rank generally have the potential to be great. Doesn't mean they will be. Other kids ranked lower or not at all can outwork them and outshine. It's just a starting point, no reason to get hung up over it. Potential = ain't done **** yet.

plus one other item - how did they rate the kid? one film? ton of film? personally? was he injured? did he have a good game? is he a WR on a running team? its amazing how much they put into the AA game.

clayton slipped through the radar because he was on a team with another highly touted kid that played the same position (the woolfolk syndrome).

My Reply:

In the 2005-2006 Rivals Recruiting Yearbook they have the Top 10 Teams who finished with the highest avg rank in the recruiting classes from 1995-2005 all but Georgia won a National Championship. There is some very interesting stuff in the list for people who say Recruiting Rankings mean Jack SHEAT.

Rivals didn't come around till 1998 so the 1995-1997 rankings are from National Recruiting Advisory(What Bobby Burton used to run) 1998-2005 are Rivals.

Here are the Top 10 Rankings there average Recruiting Rank over 10 years and each of there Winning Percentage

1995-2005
01t. Tennessee 7 Avg Rank 101-25 80% or a 9-2 avg season 1 NC
01t. Florida State 7 Avg Rank 102-23 82% or a 9-2 avg season 1 NC
03t. Michigan 8 Avg Rank 95-29 77% or a 8-3 avg season 1 NC
03t. Miami 8 Avg Rank 95-26 79% or a 9-2 avg season 1 NC
05t. Texas 9 Avg Rank 92-33-1 73% or a 8-3 avg season 1 NC
05t. Southern Cal 9 Avg Rank 82-40-1 67% or a 7-4 avg season 2 NC
07. LSU 10 Avg Rank 81-40-1 66% or a 7-4 avg season 1 NC
08. Ohio State 11 Avg Rank 97-28 77% or a 8-3 avg season 1 NC
09. Florida 12 Avg Rank 96-30-1 76% or a 8-3 avg season 1 NC
10. Georgia 13 Avg Rank 88-35 72% or a 8-3 avg season

The only teams that won National Championships in that timespan that weren't in the Top 10 over 10 years worth of recruiting were Nebraska 1995, 1997 Split, and Oklahoma 2000.

10 out of 13 NC came from the Top 9 Highest Avg Recruiting Ranking Teams. Also those teams were really good winning programs in BCS confrences over that timespan.

So my conclusion based off of Facts pointed out on my previous post if you consistently get Top 5 to Top 10 classes every year for a long period of time you will not only have a very good winning program but you will eventually break through with a National Championship.

looking at your list, i'd conclude that being a "traditional power" or a school in a high density area of talent is what matters.

Scott D
1/30/2006, 06:47 AM
yeah that list is only slightly full of said 'traditional power' programs.

Doged
1/30/2006, 06:49 AM
Tons of ways to read those numbers. I'd say 50% of the NC's went to schools with "top 5 classes" and 50% did not. Blue chip recruits are nice and all, but I'd guess a 50% success rate is probably about right for them. Half of 'em do well and half of 'em never pan out. Again, that's just a SWAG.

That said, some of the ones that do pan out turn out to be amazing players at the college level.

jkm, the stolen pifwafwi
1/30/2006, 09:18 AM
recruiting rankings rely on the fact that as an aggregate, the traditional powers tend to be towards the top. this is because these teams tend to land some high profile athletes that the services can easily discern as being "special". the problem is that there is a more than good chance that the "special" guy isn't what makes the team win.

lets take our 2000 class for example - the big names were sims, jammal brown, chretien, vernon maxwell and will peoples. these were followed by our last second recruiting steals of works and ronbrose jones.

did they make that class or did the also rans of clayton, cody, perkins, and teddy lehman? how about had brown not switched from his recruiting service position of DT to his final position of OT?

this class was ranked in the 20's yet even by their own suckified barometer of accuracy, the nfl draft, it had 6 guys drafted.

the 2001 class? ugh. yes our top player, harris, was a draft pick, but i'm less than thrilled with this whole 3 and done crap. however, the rest of it sans our collegiate transfers wasn't what i would call "great".

as a side note, did anyone catch that gundy is going the eddie sutton route for football? give us your masses...

The 2000 class was ranked 13th by Rivals...and if you notice in the 1999-2001 classes FOR EVERY TEAM they gave out A LOT MORE 2 and 1 Stars then Today......The Average Star in the 1999-2001 Team Rankings for Every Team are Way Down Compared to Today if ALL YOU ARE IS CONCERNED WITH RANKINGS.

OU has had 2 Sleepers make it into the NFL out of about 15+ or So 2 star slepers Mark Clayton/Teddy Lehman.

look, i subscribed to rivals for 5 years. after the 2002 recruiting season (the pickryl class), they dropped the number of 5*s and 4*s they gave out. this was because they were about to go under in 2002 and were trying to appease every fan base to get as many subscriptions as possible. in 2003, with more capital they restricted the numbers they gave out. there were 37 or so 5*s in the pickryl class and have been around 25 since. there were hundreds of 4*s and are limited to pretty much the top 150 now.

this annual change in philosophy, along with my apathy towards recruiting, was one of the main reasons i stopped subscribing to the site. it was absolutely impossible to compare one year to the next because the factors changed so dramatically. think about it like the "tweaks" to the BCS, crap changed all the time.

one year auburn was ranked #2 because they had 34 recruits. the next year, they changed the formula to one that capped the total amount that you could get from a class.

the weight that grade risk plays into rankings has been changed on nearly an annual basis from none to a lot to everything in between.

kind of goes with my point about them changing it every year then. i seem to remember them stating that 2*s means you have gotten a D1 offer. if that's the case, these rankings have to be dealt with on a scale of 4, not 5, which further depreciates the rankings and their historical context.

further proof about the rankings can be seen in daniel tabon - unrated until a month after he commits he goes to a 3 star. brandon crow from a 2 star to a 3 star. by biasing the ratings towards the traditional powers you get a massive self-fulfilling prophecy.

of course, the unwritten rule is that even if tabon was talented enough to be a 5*, there is no way they would rank him that way because it would beg to many questions. you bump him to a 3* which makes everyone happy.
