I thought this was a pretty decent assessment for next season...

7. Oklahoma 2005 Record: 8-4
Why Oklahoma could be the Pre-preseason No. 1: The common perception is that the 2005 Sooners were a major disappointment after playing in the previous two national championship games, but it was a solid season with the four losses coming to TCU, UCLA, Texas and Texas Tech, who combined to lose a total of six games. It was one of the toughest schedules ever played, yet OU still finished impressively with a Holiday Bowl win over Oregon. This year, there’s more than enough talent returning on both sides of the ball to expect a run for the Big 12 title, and maybe even more. The baby-young receiving corps of last year should be a strength, the linebacking corps should be among the best in the nation, and the secondary should be fantastic. Of course, Adrian Peterson returns and should be the nation’s best player.
Why Oklahoma isn’t the Pre-preseason No. 1: September 2nd at Oregon. The Ducks should be just as good as last season, and it’ll have some extra motivation after the Holiday Bowl loss. There are some key losses on the offensive line, and FB J.D. Runnels will be sorely missed. The big question mark is still QB Rhett Bomar, who might have all the talent in the world, but still has to prove he can be a consistent winner.
What Oklahoma needs to do to get to the Fiesta Bowl: Get a big season out of Bomar. Every defense will load up to stop Peterson, so Bomar has to be a weapon with his arm as well as his legs after completing only 54% of his passes with ten touchdown passes and ten interceptions. He was every bit the big-time recruit Peterson was, and if he starts to play like it, the sky is the limit.
Realistic, feet-on-the-ground, goal to shoot for: The Fiesta Bowl. It’s not going to be a walk in the park, but the schedule sets up perfectly with the potential for a splashy opening day win at Oregon to set the tone, the Texas game to get the huge win needed to get high up in the rankings, and a relatively easy rest of the slate with the road games coming at Oklahoma State, Missouri, Texas A&M and Baylor.
The number one thing to work on is: The return game. OU was 11th in the Big 12 in both punt and kickoff returns averaging only 7.4 yards on punt returns and 18.18 on kickoff returns. Most importantly, as already mentioned, is to make Bomar a more efficient passer.
Biggest offensive loss: OT Davin Joseph
Biggest defensive loss: DT Dusty Dvoracek

I'm not sure I agree with their rankings 100%, but I think they are right on to say that OU needs OL retooling, Bomar to step up, and a new FB. If the line steps up, and Bomar is 100% better after a good spring and summer, this could be a banner year.

Damn it! We're playing Oregon on the 2nd??? Too bad my plane tickets have me out to Eugene on the 15th-stupid waste of money.

Outside of the whole "we can't bother to learn their schedule" and the diss on Bomar it's actually not bad...and I really hope our secondary is FANTASTIC.

Yeah, I would be pretty worried if we were opening at Oregon. Thank God that's not true.

And apparently they don't know that the national championship game isn't the Fiesta Bowl.

Why did he say that our secondary should be fantastic?

Have they posted the official non-conference schedule yet? I'm guessing we open at home against directional state U.

Thanks for the post Desert - fair assessement.

Common sense tells me to be cautious in my own assessement.

However, Sooner Pride tells me we will go to the NC in 2007!

Yeah, I thought getting a couple of cover corners was your second biggest concern after OL? No?

Well, we really only lose one corner. But if Reggie moves over that should seal up pretty quick. Any way you slice it, someone with no playing experience will have to step up in one position.

Who's the CB with experience coming back? What's your starting 4 DBs right now? Patrick Allen, DJ Wolfe, Reggie Smith, ?

DJ Wolfe will be at one corner. Either Marcus Walker or Reggie Smith at the other. Safety's will be Lewis Baker and either Darrian Williams, Jason Carter, Keenan Clayton or Nick Harris.

I wasn't a big fan of Lewis Baker this past year, but if the coaches think he's our best option, then thats good enough for me.

OL concerns will be a huge issue. If we can get Walker, I think that shores up one tackle position.

I would love to see Demarco take care of this problem for us. Hopefully he can catch the ball. It is a possibility since AD will be getting most of the time at RB.

I still don't like moving Reggie to CB. Our safeties will be an even bigger concern then last year. Keep Marcus and DJ as CBs and Reggie back at SS. Then let Harris or Williams fight for the FS spot. I don't like having Marcus, Reggie, or DJ riding the pine.

I couldn't stand Baker back there, btw. He nearly made us lose vs Baylor.

What's wrong with Reggie Smith or PA? They both looked great last year at times. Give them another year.

He did'nt say one thing about our D-line. Which will be the best in College football next year. I think.

the DL and AD will be the best thing on our team I think. We'll be set at linebacker. We are stacked at receiver, and Bomar is only going to get better. Even with Bubba gone I think we'll be better at tight end because JJ Finley is really really really good. It will be interesting to see how our team comes out. I do believe that our DL can be the best in the country, that is just my opinion.

I thought it was a pretty fair assessment.. although I don't think a road game at aTm is easy. We've had some tough games there since Stoops has been on.

Which will be great news because the better our DLine is, the better our DB's will be.
