isn't the original Van's Pig Stand in Shawnee? or is it Seminole?

that's allright.

I actually like Shawnee. part of that is that Mrs. Ike's parents live there, and they are genuinely good folk. part of that is that from their house, they are <5 minutes away from everything in town. and the other part is the original Van's....

I have a Shawnee story. I was on a stage check (i.e. midterm) in my cross-country flying class and the instructor says "show me how you would divert to Shawnee". We were over Moore at the time, so I turned east. The instructor says "What are doing?" "Diverting to Shawnee." "How do you know you're headed in the right direction?" "Because I can see Shawnee right there." "Humor me and pretend that you can't see Shawnee and plot a new course on the chart." "OH."

I never said it was a particularly interesting story.

in my 9th grade summer driver's ed class our highway driving "assignment" was from Norman to Shawnee and back with the high school LB's coach/driver's ed teacher. we ate at Van's. i figure that was no accident on the "teacher's" part.

and yes, he WAS wearing laceup Bike coaches shorts. we drove a SWEET maroon ford....whatever the smaller version of the LTD was in the late 80's.

major POS that car.

At first I thought you were just talking about the annual registration fee.

What kind of a scam are tribal tags anyway? How much money do the tribes contribute to the highway fund? Not that car fees or gas taxes actually go to the highway fund in this state.

Commerical tags must be a scam, too, because I see a lot of soccer moms driving around in "commerical vehicles" during the middle of the day.

back in the day, i think any truck could get a commercial tag.

Oh, to follow up on the whole tribal tag thing. When we lived out on the Navajo Reservation because we are indian we paid $13.50 for a brand new 96 Chevy Blazer tag. It would have only cost us $8 if we were Navajo tribal members.

While you're there, get one of those Absentees Shawnees to put an axe through your forehead.

It'll save me about 800 points on my next cholesterol test.

mdklatt, this is what the OK tag site thingy says. So the answer is still, we don't know.

Noncommercial Vehicle Registration

Noncommercial registration rates apply to automobiles; non commercial and non agricultural trucks; travel trailers; motor homes; motorcycles and mopeds.

Noncommercial vehicles are registered on the basis of their year of registration, as follows:

1st through 4th year of registration $93.00
5th through 8th year of registration $83.00
9th through 12th year of registration $63.00
13th through 16th year of registration $43.00
17th year and over $23.00

Commercial Truck Registration

Commercial trucks are trucks, truck tractors or station wagons utilized primarily in a commercial capacity. Registration fees are based upon the declared laden weight and, in some instances, the age of the vehicle.

To qualify for commercial truck registration at 15,000 lbs. or under, one (1) of the following must be presented:

Federal Employers Identification Number
Oklahoma Sales Tax Permit Number
If a sole proprietor, a copy of Schedule C from the most recent tax year federal income tax return.
All commercial trucks and truck tractors are required to display the name of the commercial establishment or the words "Commercial Vehicle" permanently and prominently upon the outside of the vehicle, in letters not less than 2 inches high.

As far as scams go, it's pretty far down the list compared to using the military to force a peaceful group of people off their land because it has gold on it and marching them a thousand miles in the winter, effectively killing a large percentage of them.

gdc..........I cringe at some of the awful things that people in power have done to other people.

I also cringe that the salvation of the Indian nations is tied to gambling and cigarettes.

I had nothing to do with this, so I better not be subsidizing tribal members to drive on Oklahoma's craptastic roads.

I think they're full fledged tribes, because a lot of them have gaming establishments, which I would image means they have gaming compacts with the govt.

Almost every time I drive through Shawnee on I-40 going west toward OKC or Norman, I try to make it a point and stop off at the Taco Bueno near the mall. Good times, good times.
