Why does it cost so much to have high speed internet service?

Do ISPs pay someone for internet access?

Is the cost you pay meerly for the access and support of the ISP?

Just wondering.

critical_phil

because people will gladly pay it.

it's just a guess........

Supply and demand.

More hardware/cost/technical issues than dialup.

Probably not.

Because the lust for porn can never be satisfied on a dial-up.

My DSL service is coming up for renewal and they want 5 bucks more every year.

I figured it was greed.

"so much"?

it's cheaper than my cell phone, or landline at this point, and i use it a lot more than i use either of those things

$34.95 per month seems steep to me.

I just think the maturity slope of the product should have the price dropping and the market becoming more competitive.

It still seems that the only way to judge who's ISP product is the best is to try it for yourself.

Start-up ISPs seem risky and the ones that seem to have a lock on the market abuse their customers IMO.

i'm not gonna argue that high-speed isn't a complete racket (and cell phones too)

americans LOVE convenience and will pay just about anything for it.

well, it used to be lots more than that for ISDN at home, and that is 128k max

the big dialup services are still like $25+

i will say that they could stabilize the service a bit, i think it took off more than they thought it would, at least on the cable side

i haven't dealt with DSL really, but those seem to be the only real choices unless you are in some rural spot and can't get them

My innerweb is with my cable company....that bill is $133/month. I'm sure I could get by cheaper with satellite and DSL but what a giant pain in the *** it is to chage, especially to change ISP's.

Please tell me that the $133 includes television service. Otherwise that's the worst price evar.

I pay $55/month for Comcast cable internet for 4Mb down. I wish they had some cheaper tiers because I don't need that much bandwidth. I'd do fine at 2Mb. However, I also use Vonage for my home phone service which is cheap - $25/month. The problem is I'm now pretty much locked into what I have. If I decided to save money and go back to dialup, I'd have to have my landline turned back on which I don't really want to do. I figure I'm still ahead the way it is.

If you want a satellite dish, you can have one. HOA's are not allowed to restrict them anymore.

That part about Phil and family not being allowed to dump raw sewage from their trailer into the water runoff drain is still enforcable.

We got a nastygram because a trailer was parked in front of our house. I have no idea whose trailer it was, but it wasn't ours. And for stuff like this we get to pay hundreds of dollars a year.

I friggin' hate our HOA.

that would be illegal, they can limit the placement of them (ie not on the roof) but not the use of the dish, you have every right to install it in a private use area

Me too. One of the benefits of my wife working out of the house is her company pays for DSL/phone.

i'm not allowed to have any out buildings unless the same brick/roofing is used as is on the house.

which means i'll never have any kind of storage shed.

I once had a neighbor who took that approach and eventually had a warrant for his arrest (OKC). Seems all the fines, fees, etc. mounted up to the point a bench warrant was issued. It made the news, but nothing ever came of it. He sold the house and moved to a non-HOA neighborhood.

However, having grown up seeing house painted lime green and a neighbor's semi parked in the grass of a front yard, I am all for HOA restrictions. It is just those old windbags with no life enforcing them that are the problem.

Ever see those tornado shelters built in someone's front yard? Mindboggling.

I am so tempted to switch to cable again for awhile...

I just got a Cox affer for:

Complete Basic Cable
High speed internet
4mb download speed
Cox phone service

$85.31 per month

Free Installation

The fine print on the ad is so small that I had to use a x10 magnifying glass to read it. Stuff like that is why I'm skepticle to go with thier service again.

I'm sure I'll find something about it that PO's me enough to stay with my DSL and DTV.

I just told the phone company to die a few days ago. I signed up for comcast internet only, and Vonage. Everything rocks.
