SOONERS WEEKLY
For the Week of January 23, 2006
SOONERS MOVE UP TO 15th IN NATION
OKLAHOMA HOSTS No. 9 ARIZONA STATE THIS WEEKEND

THIS WEEK’S GAMES - The No. 15-ranked University of Oklahoma® hockey club (14-8-2) host the No. 9-ranked Sun Devils from Arizona State University (13-10-0) this weekend. Earlier this season, Oklahoma traveled to Tempe to play a pair of games against ASU. In the first contest, the Sun Devils shutout the Sooners for the first time in the three year history of OU Hockey by a score of 3-0. The next evening, the Sooners got off to a slow start, allowing ASU two goals on the first two shots of the game. The Sooners played well thereafter but eventually lost the game by a tally of 5-4.

LAST OU HOCKEY GAMES – The Sooners’ last games were two weekends ago when they hosted the Midshipmen from the United States Naval Academy in a pair of entertaining and physical contests. In the first game, OU’s offense broke open a 1-1 game with five goals in the second period to coast to a comfortable 6-3 win over Navy. In the second game of the weekend set, OU jumped on Navy with three goals early in the game. Despite the deep deficit on the scoreboard, Navy continued to play hard and OU had to hold on in the third period to preserve a 5-3 win over the Midshipmen.

SCOUTING THE SUN DEVILS – Arizona State’s last games were two weekends ago as well when ASU hosted Towson University in Tempe, beating Towson by the identical score of 9-1 in each of the two games between the teams. The Sun Devil scoring attack is led by forward Joe Ahern who has 13 goals and 10 assists in 23 games. Ahern is followed by Ray Corey (16-6-22), Ryan Esner (9-8-17) and Rick Ferroni (6-10-16). In net, the Sun Devils have split the goaltending duties between Kyle Bronsteen (9 games played, 2.78 goals against average, .903 save percentage), Herb Hollins (6.5 GP, 2.74 GAA, .888 SV) and Colin Cook (7.5 GP, 2.90 GAA, .909 SV) this season.

RANKINGS – The Sooners moved up two spots and are currently ranked 15th in the nation in the latest ACHA Coaches Division 1 ranking. In the most recent unofficial computer ranking of ACHA D1 clubs, Oklahoma is currently ranked 13th and Arizona State is ranked 6th. This year’s ACHA Division 1 National Championships will be hosted by West Chester University and take place March 2-5, 2006 in suburban Philadelphia. Usually, those teams ranked in the Top Sixteen in the February 17th, 2006 ranking will qualify for the tournament. However, because the regular season champions from the ACHA’s Central States Collegiate Hockey League, East Coast Hockey Association and East Coast Hockey League will receive an automatic berth to the tournament, the possibility exists that a “Notre Dame-style BCS bump” may occur to one or more of those teams at the tail of the Top 16. Oklahoma, playing as an Independent team in the ACHA, will have to earn a spot in the ACHA D1 National Championships based solely on their ranking in the February 17th poll. The next ACHA Coaches D1 ranking is scheduled to be released on Friday, February 3rd, 2006.

SOONERS ADD TWO TO ROSTER – The OU Hockey club added two players to its roster this past week. Cam Forni, a 5’10”, 185 lb. sophomore from Milwaukee, Oregon, has transferred from Denver University to OU and will wear No. 24 for the Sooners. Forni is the younger brother of Marty Standish, who currently plays for the minor pro CHL Oklahoma City Blazers. Colt Kudron, a 5’9”, 205 lb. junior from Oklahoma City, has rejoined the OU Hockey club after sitting out last semester. Kudron will wear No. 44 for the Sooners.

SOONERS HOME GAMES ON THE AIR – All remaining OU Hockey home games will be broadcast over the internet this season. Join Caleb Fox, a junior from Rowlett, Texas (play-by-play), and Keaton Fuchs, a junior from Norman (color), as they bring the hard-hitting, fast-paced action that is Sooners Hockey to you over the internet throughout the 2005-2006 season. OU Hockey broadcasts begin 15 minutes prior to faceoff. Oklahoma hockey fans can listen to the OU Hockey internet broadcast by going to either www.icehockey.ou.edu or www.broadcastmonsters.com and clicking the appropriate link.

HOME SWEET HOME – Although formally known as Blazers Ice Centre, when the Sooners take the ice to “Oklahoma!” and “Boomer Sooner” blares over the sound system after every Sooners goal, the rink transforms into the “Sooners Ice Center”. All Sooners home games are played at 7:30 P.M. at Blazers Ice Centre, 8000 South I-35, in Oklahoma City.
