Anyone else have these? I had this set in 5th grade. No idea what happened to them. This guy seems to think they're worth something. I thought they were pretty sweet back then.

I had those too. Sadly most were lost during the 'Great Pencil Break War of 1987'

those were the shizz.

they sold them in the student store for a nickel, but you weren't allowed to pick which one you got - which pretty much opened up the playground black market pencil trade.........

I paid slightly less that $145, though.

Yes, and I also liked the NFL stamp books you collected from the old DX stations, but that was early 70's, I think.

I always used the crappy/teams I hated pencils first and spent longer at the pencil sharpener with those teams.

Pencil sharpeners. haha. Gotta love those wall mounted things. The elementary school 'water cooler'. :texan:

You just brought back some memories. We used to get in a lot of trouble at the pencil sharpener. A one-person-at-a-time rule was implemented. We morphed that into taking the long way to the sharpener and pelting the person sharpening their pencil with erasers. Ah, good times.

5th grade for me too, and same situation critical_phil described going on at my school!

The Steelers pencil was the most sought-after; my 2nd favorite was the Broncos 'cause the colors looked cool on a pencil.

You could get those in the library out of a machine and no you couldn't choose, unless you had a friend who was an aide in the library and had the key to the machine......

The ones I had in the late 80's/early 90's were a little different. They had the helmets on the pencils and my friends and I would draw a football field on someone's desk and use our pencils as players in an imaginary football game to pass the time.

I remember those. I didn't even know what the NFL was back then, and I still thought they were cool. The new ones are much fancier graphically (and round, as well), but have lost something.

A dime a piece at my school. I just about kicked the machine to death for giving me the NE Patriots 4 straight times. Yeah, the Pats sucked major *** back then and those were worthless on the pencil black market going on at the playground. I swore at the time the Principal was hording the Dallas Cowboys pencils.

I had the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings.

The Vikings one had all of the teeth marks in it. :D

Same here. Pringle's tubes were perfect for storing those.

i always traded for the seahawks pencils (jim zorn was the man).

you had to be willing to give up too much to get a steelers pencil - though having a cowboys pencil could usually get you at least 2 buccaneers and a falcons.

Those are much better than the old school ones that were roughly box-shaped and you had to put the stickers on yourself.

Me too on both the pencils and the mini helmets; those bring back some pretty frustrating memories of never getting the one i wanted, which was Dallas; i think the pencils were a Christmas gift one year and were bought as a complete set from Penney's.

I too loved the pencils and helmets. The new helmets just aren't the same, you don't get to put the stickers and face mask on.

I found a grocery store once that had OU helmets in the machine. I got home and the stickers had razorbacks on them. Evidently it has scared me for life....

Spek for the memories.

I used to trade all of my others for the Atlanta Falcons. I must have had 20 Falcon pencils at one point.

We had those in a pencil dispencer at school. You put in a nickel or a dime and out came an NFL pencil....I remember it was kinda like a slot machine....

I also had the NFL pencil sets, but I didn't have a particular preference for a certain team. I just used them all.

I also had the NFL bedspread and matching drapes as a kid (I think they either came from Sears or JC Penney). It had all the teams listed in their graphic fonts plus drawings of no-name NFL players in action. If I remember correctly, one was a Steeler, one was a Redskin kicking a field goal, one was a Cardinal (?) catching a pass and another was a Colt.

That must have been a heck of a marketing job by some company; same pencils, same machine, always got the same pencil...and the Steelers were a big one at my school, too. How on earth did they get so popular in Tulsa?

I guess because they beat America's Team in the big game twice in the '70s. Darn you Jackie Smith.:(
