Bosses at America's leading gay rights group are demanding a summit meeting with the producers (http://contactmusic.com/new/xmlfeed.nsf/mndwebpages/gay%20rights%20group%20american%20idol%20is%20homo phobic_20_01_2006#) of TV talent show AMERICAN IDOL (http://contactmusic.com/new/xmlfeed.nsf/mndwebpages/gay%20rights%20group%20american%20idol%20is%20homo phobic_20_01_2006#) after claiming the programme is "increasingly homophobic".
Officials at the Gay And Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) were appalled by homophobic remarks made by judges SIMON COWELL and RANDY JACKSON on the first show of the new season, which aired in America (http://contactmusic.com/new/xmlfeed.nsf/mndwebpages/gay%20rights%20group%20american%20idol%20is%20homo phobic_20_01_2006#) on Tuesday (17JAN06).
On the programme, Brit Cowell told one effeminate wannabe to "shave off your beard and wear a dress," while Jackson asked another audition hopeful, "Are you a girl?" Both contestants were rejected.
Now GLAAD bosses are fighting back, demanding an audience with Idol bosses.
A spokesman tells entertainment (http://contactmusic.com/new/xmlfeed.nsf/mndwebpages/gay%20rights%20group%20american%20idol%20is%20homo phobic_20_01_2006#) news website TMZ.com, "GLAAD is reaching out to the show's producers to discuss our concerns and the concerns of community members and allies, who have contacted us about this matter."

the he/she at the end of the second show says before his/her audition

"people accuse me all the time of looking like a girl, and i laugh my butt off because its so funny"

perhaps before GLAAD goes after American Idol they can help a few LOST souls find their true identity.....you know, send them a "welcome to the club" packet or something

Bosses at America's leading gay rights group are demanding a summit meeting with the moderators of popular message board Soonerfans.com (http://contactmusic.com/new/xmlfeed.nsf/mndwebpages/gay%20rights%20group%20american%20idol%20is%20homo phobic_20_01_2006#) after claiming the postings are "increasingly homophobic".
Officials at the Gay And Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) were appalled by homophobic remarks made by poster HoustonStephen and sanantoniosooner on a thread on the South Oval.
In the post, Sooner sanantoniosooner told one effeminate wannabe to "the dude dresses and styles his hair like a chick. He really should stop the "what are you looking at?" card.
," while HoustonStephen also posted, "wanna bet he was beat up a lot as a kid?" Both posts were accepted and put on the board. Now GLAAD bosses are fighting back, demanding an audience with board moderators.

I think he's very confused. he's a better looking girl than a lot of girls.

and the guy's completely obvlivious, apparently. Looking like a girl aside (weird that he doesn't notice that, especially since he probably shops in the girl section) he can't sing. and Paula even said that--just by the singing, he doesn't sing well. And to think they should accept him just to make a point that they don't discriminate is kinda defeating the point of having auditions and looking for talent.

Wait, I thought talent was based on self-esteem?

I thought the comments were probably a little out of line for a national television audience, but probably stuff I'd have said in the same situation. Idol probably should have just not aired the segment and given us more Patrick Fletcher. They also made kind of a mistake by promoting the segment as the strangest thing you'll ever see on American Idol, etc etc etc. I mean, the kid's confused about his sexual identity and probably has some pretty severe hormonal issues-but that ain't NEAR the strangest thing I've ever seen on that show.

That ersatz dude was pretty freakin' weird, though.

so did patrick fletcher go to hollywood? the only time they showed him was when he was drawing a map of the US.

i'd agree with this, however.......the kid allowed Idol to tape him walking into the arena alone.......he/she/it allowed them to tape him solo outside.......there's no way in hell that wasnt pre-scripted......i'd have to think that the kid was playing them just as much as they played the kid

if thats the way that kid goes thru life everyday, he's heard much worse - he knew what he was walking into

Actually, I didn't think comments were nearly as bad as they could have been. I thought they were pretty restrained. I could understand the confusion--if they hadn't said he was a guy I never would have guessed. And the fact that the kid said he gets mistaken for a girl all the time shows that he's rather used to that reaction. the fact that he thinks it's hilarious shows how oblivious he is. Explaining how he doesn't realize he can't sing.

And there's no way he picked the song by accident--the comment about the lyrics was dead on. the kid knew what he was getting into.

i think Idol's mantra is "if you're going to use us for your 15 minutes of fame, we're going to use you for a few yuks"
