But I wonder what the short term results would be.

Would Osama be denounced as a traitor to Islam and a blasphemer and be "removed" from leadership as was Anwar Sadat of Egypt for entering into a peace agreement with Israel about 20 years ago.

What would G.W. Bush's political base think about? The Neocons? Christian Right? Military Industrial Complex??

number 1, even if we wanted to negotiate a truce, I don't think it would happen.
Osama would have too many demands (like getting our oil companies out of the ME, removing our troops from Iraq, and other crap), and the negotiations would go nowhere.
number 2, osama would be denounced as a traitor most likely if he could not get those demands met. if the US and AQ were to agree to a truce without any change in US policy and posture in the ME, then I think average muslims would be pretty ****ed at OBL and AQ for bringing all this fighting to their turf and not getting any positive (whatever that means in the islamic world) changes from it.
3, the US isn't about to change its policies and posture in the ME based on demands by OBL. it would just further the perception amongst muslims that we will cave if you just hit us pretty hard in the nose once. I think OBL absolutely believes (or believed) that this is the hard truth about us. If that is indeed the case, any truce that is agreed to in which the US makes any concessions whatsoever, just reinforces that belief, and the next time OBL wants us to do something, he'll think he can use the threat, or the use, of terrorism to meet his goal.

Yes, our leaders do have the responsibility to bring the war on terror to a close as quickly as possible, but I think that negotiating a truce with OBL just prolongs it rather than helping bring it to a close.

but thats just my opinon.

He has no interesting points. You dont negotiate with terrorists you kill them. OBL doesnt want peace with an existing US, he wants time to regroup and rearm. He wants muslims to band to together and take over the world.

While we may not have him yet we have smashed his little club and acheived a great deal more than just having him would have ever accomplished.

I dont think they ever agreed to hand him over, I think they agreed to put him on trial by them if we handed over our intelligence information. That would have been a huge mistake. This guy is an idiot to suggest it was a mistake not to give into their demands.

I've been studying military history my entire adult life. No one asks for a truce who is not losing and usually losing with no hope of turning it around and winning. Therefore, I am delighted to hear the dirty rat ask for a truce.:)
