Are now known as the SAVAGE STORM

There will be an official announcement made soon, but I just heard it today. For all of you who have no idea what I am talking about the NCAA said that colleges that have names or mascots that are degrading to native american peoples they have to be changed. I could really care less myself, however I am native american so yes what I think does count :)

Southeastern had a foosball team? How many of them were on 'ship? Did they have have to buy their own beer and popcorn?

they were tough back then, had a ton of players form Texas. their QB at the time was from Edmond and was an All-American.

They had a basketball player by the name of Dennis Rodman. Why did he end up at such a small school with his talent? Because when he graduated High School he was a 5'11" forward. He grew 11" (taller) after age 18.

I remember their games vs. East Central . . . not the friendliest rivalry.

Yes, they were the LSC North division champs 2 or 3 years straight now.

And ya know that team NEO? The team fielding potential OU players? Well SE has beaten them for a couple of years now. How, I have no idea?

I think you have NEO confused with NSU, Northeastern State University, a fellow Lone Star Conference member with Southeastern. NEO is the junior college in My-aaa-muh.

Southeastern is indicative of that entire part of Oklahoma. A bit run down and depressing to be in.

But hey they gave us:

Methinks they were inspired by Tulsa's successes this year. "Hmmm, we need a two word team name like those cool guys in Tulsa, oooh and we need to pick a weather event too, like those cool guys in Tulsa. I got it, we'll be the "Savage Storm" (which sounds a great deal like a male porn name) but clear copycatting of the Golden Hurricane.

SOSU Savage Storm – I like it.

It keeps the traditional Savage name.

It’s plenty badass.

And, it’s somehow fitting. Weather wise. In Oklahoma.

If anything, it is copying from St. John’s, who changed their mascot from the Redmen to the Redstorm in 1995. And, what the heck is a Redstorm, or a Golden Hurricane, for that matter.

Storm seems to be a popular name for schools with injun mascots when they switch.

I think they should have picked an Oklahoma tribe and asked for authorization to use their name just to p1ss-off the NCAA. Actually, the SOSU Chickasaws would have been unique AND cool.

Those Chickasaws spend a helluva lot of money on tv commercials. They should have bought the mascot for SOSU with some of that dough. Good idea.

I beg to differ. Tribal approval is not guaranteed as long as the grass grows and the rivers run, so to speak, nor should it be.

If I were a regent or university management, I would be concerned that, oh let's say the university football team goes on a 10-year losing streak, and the tribe withdraws its support of the use of the name ten years down the road. All the product licensing and tradition would be gone, as well as the reputation of an institution for higher learning.

The Native American tribes own their tribal names and that'd surely be upheld in any court.

They don't own their language, though. Using a Native American word for eagle, wolf, bear or warrior would not only resurrect a word of an increasingly forgotten language, but also honor the heritage without putting the university/school at risk.

With all that being said, I was secretly hoping that SOSU would choose "Gamers" or "Gamblers." But, "Bingo Warriors" has a good ring to it! ;)

F the NCAA. They are asshats!

I want some school to call themselves the Fighting Whitey's and see if the NCAA will come down on them. Whats wrong, no group exists here and how can you offend a color.

Vikings is offensive to my Norwegian heritage. They should ban Vikings!

Choctaw's are the primary tribe.

The Choctaw headquarters is in Durant. Chickasaw's are the bitter rival if you will :D

Multiple times when the commercial has come on, girls comment 'are all Chickasaws white?' or something of that nature.

I guarantee if you ask Joe Consumer to name Indian tribes, Seminoles will be one of the first ones out of his mouth.

Fact is, as you probably know, a person doesn't have to be mostly indian to qualify for tribal membership. As a practical matter, methinks having one enrolled native-american great-grandparent will suffice in most cases. I'm cool with that. The really sad part is, there are lots of Oklahomans who would qualify for tribal membership if their ancestors had not been concerned about prejudice against indians and therefore chose not to enroll.

One of my best friend's who I mentioned earlier played QB there back in the day. He happens to be an Osage and is employed with his tribe (hi father is also politically involved with them). I told him they finally changed the name the other day and he wasn't happy. He said he even wrote a letter to the NCAA and told them they were giving in to a small % of protestors.
I must admit that Savages and Redskins are pretty bad.

I fixed it for you.

Naming them the Chickasaws would've set off one hell of a riot.

Count me in as one of them, on both sides of my family.
