I hope the writers use their time off for some reflection. I am not feeling this season at all. Michael is turning into Homer Simpson (and late-series Homer at that), there's too much emphasis on high-concept plots, and the writing feels like, well, writing. The first two seasons you could totally believe it was a documentary, with maybe just a touch of zaniness. Now it's all zany all the time with even 50% more zany! Where's the subtlety and the awkward pauses? I can't decide if last season was the last good season or the first bad season.

Bingo. This episode seemed to be back on track. It wasn't LOL funny for the most part, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The forced jokes were getting old. There were a lot of subtle touches, like Dwight and the rifle. Okay, Dwight and his blow gun was LOL funny. :D

I don't know. I think there is some of the Kramer effect going on with Michael, where to get the same effect his actions have to get more and more extreme. It's still one of the best shows on American basic cable, but it's definitely slipped a little in my mind. I also think the 1 hour episodes may have drained them a little.

The fact that Ricky Gervais ended the BBC version after 2 seasons is further proof that the man is a genius. Even though the US version is still enjoyable, you're bound to get this talk when the show falls off even a little.

I wonder why they got rid of Toby? I imagine that Paul Leiberstein (Toby) wanted to devote more time to writing. I think that's why B.J. Novak (Ryan) left Scranton this season. The Ryan-as-boss premise didn't have nearly the payoff I was expecting.

I'd like to see something like that if well done, but I predict fail in a major way. This show is lightning in a bottle, not a formula that can be transferred to something else. Even The Office itself has had trouble living up to expectations this season.

Maybe they'll go all CSI and simply branch out to different locations.

The thing that makes The Office work is how they develop characters. I think they can translate that pretty well to wherever they want to go. Costa Rica for instance.

And I, for one, loved this season.

mdklatt
5/16/2008, 02:05 PM
And I, for one, loved this season.

I'll reserve final judgment until seeing it again on DVD, but it was very uneven. There were a lot of episodes that just didn't fit, even if on their own they were funny. I mean, pick a tone. If you want to go super dark, do that. Or if you want to lighten things up, do that. Or even mix them together as long as it's not so abrupt from one week to the next. Compare last week to the week before--WTF? Gave me whiplash. It definitely ended on a high note last night, though. I wonder if the writers spent the entire strike thinking this one up.

I know it could qualify for the "things you're ashamed of" thread, but I'm all about Jim and Pam getting together, and now I'm pulling for Michael and Holly. I don't really care about Dwight/Angela/Andy, but their little tryst is the funniest.

I think Holly will be a great addition. I was hoping they'd milk the retarded Kevin deal just a bit longer, but it was greatness.

Personally I'm not too thrilled with Ryan coming back. I know BJ Novack is a writer/producer, but I have never cared for that character and I was happy when he got busted.
