at the end I realized that the only time there was music was when it came from a jukebox/record player/radio

was odd...in a cool sort of way.

The book and the movie are classic, after you read/watch them go visit McMurtry and his book stores where it was filmed in Thalia. Oh, and Ben Johnson is one of my alltime favorite actors.

Movies set in dusty small towns in Texas are downers to me.

Yeah, McMurtry's book store in Archer City is pretty awesome. Both times I've been there, he was among the shelves stocking some books. He's not very friendly though, so just leave the ole coot alone. ;)

BTW, he has a huge Barry Goldwater banner hanging in the front office that I'd love to have. If I remember, it has Goldwater's profile and his famous slogan, "In your heart you know he's right."

You might re-visit William Faulkner's "Long Hot Summer" if you like Cybils funbags.

The sequel Texasville is pretty funny.

Peter Bogdonavich was bagging Sybil in those days. I wonder if he got the hots for her before or after the skinny dipping scene?

i've been over to archer city couple or 3 times in past year. bookstores all around the square. (maybe only 2 sides; but there's 5 or 6 of them)
the old movie theater is still there, kinda.

lots of (old) oil wells in that area.

i like "picture show", & "texasville" too, but t'ville is kinda silly.

annie potts was his wife.

"hud" was also a good "west texas movie". i read where the town scenes
were filmed in claude. or maybe clarendon , home of Kenny King.
