In the past someone asked, "Why the '54 and '56 teams didn't go to a bowl game?". The answer, the Big-Seven conference had a no-repeat rule. The 1951 team couldn't go because the OU regents voted against it, OU had gone to 3 previous bowls.
The teams of '73 and '74 couldn't go bowling because they were on NCAA probation for recruiting violations.

1973
Alabama: Berryman, UPI
Michigan: National Championship Foundation*, Poling*
Notre Dame: AP, FB News, FW, Helms, National Championship Foundation*, NFF
Ohio St.: FACT, National Championship Foundation*, Poling*
Oklahoma: Billingsley, DeVold, Dunkel, Football Research, Sagarin

Thats why I said of some sort...

I guess we can call it a "CRIMSON CHAMPIONSHIP" like Alabama's extra ones.

If we beat USC in 73 instead of tying we would have been the only 3 time NC ever. I guess we could still claim the 54 title if we wanted or th 49 title. But we don't.

So...does that mean Bama is claiming 2 National Titles that year?

I think I get it now...
