Nikolette has completed radiation therapy. As expected, she is feeling weak. Doctors and Nurses knew Nikolette was recovering from the radiation when she began painting her toe nails. Chemotherapy to kill her bone marrow begins today. She will be in a sterile environment until her new bone marrow is able to produce enough blood cells to fight infections.

Wednesday January 11, 2006
As you can tell from Nikolette’s entry in the guestbook, she is in good spirits. Today she begins radiation therapy to kill any remaining cancer cells. For the next few weeks she will dine on specially prepared germ free hospital food. This means she will have to give up her favorite food. Which is takeout cashew chicken.

Friday January 6, 2006
Nikolette has been admitted to OHSU Doernbecher Childrens Hospital. She developed a high fever due to an infection. She is responding to the antibiotics and the Transplant Team Doctors believe she will stay on schedule for the transplant. Assuming the infection remains under control, next week she will begin radiation and chemotherapy treatment to prepared her for the transplant.

Wednesday January 4, 2006
The cancer is in remission. Unfortunately, a matching bone marrow donor was not found. Due to the short window of opportunity for the transplant a search was made for a matching cord blood donor. A match was found. Nikolette is preparing for the transplant. She spends evenings at home and returns to the hospital each day for chemotherapy and various medical tests and examinations. In a few days she will enter Oregon Health Sciences University (OSHU) to receive the transplant.

Nikolette’s parents and brother, Ted, would like to take a moment to thank the many people who are showing their support for Nikolette.

Thank you to her family and friends who continue to organize fund raising events to help with her transplant and hospital care and costs.

Thank you to the Legacy pediatric nursing staff who make such extraordinary efforts caring for Nikolette as she struggles with serious infections and the side effects of chemotherapy. Thank you to the doctors here in Portland and from around the country who lend their expertise to find effective ways to combat her disease.

Thank you to our new Sooner and our Duck friends for taking on a challenge that reminds us all what sportsmanship is really about. Thank you to college football fans from all the other schools for picking up this challenge and showing the same spirit.

Most of all, thank you to those who are showing their support for Nikolette through posts of encouragement on her website guestbook. This above all else has helped Nikolette stand defiant and in good spirits as she fights this now 8-year long battle with Leukemia.

With our sincerest appreciation,

Marc Harris
